losing coolant

Good afternoon,

I recently developed a leak in the cooling system of my 2003 2.0l Deisel Freelander TD4, and having had a good look around the radiator, hoses,etc have found that the coolant is leaking from the right-hand side of the engine where there is a small plug / bung.

Looking at the position there are plenty of hoses and pipes in the way and so I just wanted to know if this would be an easy fix for someone that has limited knowledge of engines or should I bit the bullet and get it into a garage ASAP.

can you post a pic of the offending leak ?

right-hand side of the engine

rh .. as in standing in front looking at engine .. or rh as in from sitting in cab

auto gearbox .. or manual ?

Sounds like a core plug blown or rusted through.

Sorry - the plug is on the right-hand side of the engine as in standing in front looking at the engine. I cant get a good picture, but the plug is just under the pipe with the grey cloth sleeve

The car is manual

The only place in that area i can think of which could leak would be this coolant pipe, sometime the weld corrodes and leaks from that part of the pipe.

It would be better if you removed the air duct, and most likely manifold with EGR to investigate what is really leaking from that area.

there was a good post a while back .. with pics .. about a coolant leak from those pipes
i seem to remember the pipes were a hassle to remove ..
but the fix were easy .. £20 to a local welder ?

i looked back 30pages yesterday .. but couldn't find the thread :-/
a 'search' didn't help either ..
maybe someone bookmarked that thread ?

Hi, if you go to page 573 onwards of 'what have you done to your Freelander today you'll see the pics of my FL's leak in that area. If yours is leaking from the metal coolant pipe it's quite an involved job to replace it (or get it repaired like I did), best of luck.
