Loose lay shaft

I guys not sure if anyone can held I’m not by any means a mechanic! I’ve taken the engine out of my 2a and found oil leaking from my clutch withdrawal unit this looks to have been caused my a loose stud though whilst it was off I noticed the lay shaft castle nut is loose is there a way of tightening it without stripping the gearbox ? Iv tried putting in a gear but it just turns the shaft when I try to tighten!, any help would be greatly appreciated

Whereabouts is this castle nut? I'm having trouble thinking of any that you could see if you've only taken out the engine?

i think you can put it two gears at once taking the gear stick off and moving the selector forks

You definitely can, but I'm stumped as to which he's looking at. The layshaft has a bolt, and you can't see that unless you've taken off the cover in the bell housing.

When i want to stop things turning, a lump of lead works for me, soft enough not to damage anything but hard enough not to get squished through the gear

Thanks guys just seen your replies sorry yes I did remove the clutch and clutch withdrawal unit that is were I found the castle nut to be loose on what I believe to be the lay shaft ?

thanks Steve a friend mentioned selecting two gears I was just worried about what I had to do to do this ! Is I quite a simple task ? Thanks again for your help it’s appreciated

When I had to stop mine to tighten the output nut I put two bits of plain rod (about 3/16") into two of the splines and put a large spanner across them. You can hold the rods in with duck tape or elastic bands.

There's a good explanation of how the selector mechanism works on Nick's LandRover page:

I think you have to remove the top cover before you can bypass the detents and select two gears at once.

Try putting it in 1st 2nd or 3rd gear with hand brake on 1st should lock sufficient to tighten the layshaft nut.

I’ll try that though I’m sure it rust rotates when I tighten it unless I need to do something else with another leaver?
Will definitely try though thanks Ian would be nice not to have to take the gearbox top off if I can help it

Make sure that high ratio is engaged on 4wd lever may be in nuetral from when you took the floor plates up.
Front input will turn as well as it is directly coupled to layshaft should stop when brake locks the output.
