Hi,

I am new to Land Rover ownership (or intend to be shortly!) I am looking to buy a 90 or 110 deisel station wagon defender and need to know the pros and cons between them. A 90 is big enough but my wife would prefer a 110. Personally I don't mind. What is the best model of these. I intend to use it as a shooting brake, general week-end vehicle. I also want to know the pros and cons of gas conversions for either petrol or diesels. I am well able to do all mechcanical work myself so have no qualms over replacing bits or welding ect. Any help, advice and tips would be very welcolme. I am looking to spend about £5-6k

Many Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt and welcome to Landyzone.
I would think that will be many pro's and con's to buying either a 110 or a 90. I have just become a Land Rover owner myself, i was torn between 90/110/disco and opted for a disco. All that i would be able to tell you is that which ever you do choose they are both very capable vehicles. The 110 is a slightly heavier so some performance and economy will be lost although it should be more stable on the road than the 90. As for lpg conversion to have the job done for you it's around £1000-£1500 dependant on company, but i personaly would go for deisel. If you havent test driven the 300 tdi try it. Performance is excelent and at around 26mpg urban i think it's economical.
Hope this info could be of help to you, maybe one of our defender owners could give you some more detailed info.
Enjoy Landyzone!

hi matt

i also recently became the owner of a 90 csw 300tdi. i too swithered long enough over 90/110, and ultimately i sacrificed size over a more accepting cooperative better half!(she didn't fancy manouvering a 110). £5-6k is a little optimistic for a 300tdi, but i'm sure you are well aware of the value of such vehicles. however, if you are handy with the tools and welding then no doubt a semi project will be within your grasp. as for choice of fuel, well i simply chose the more convenient, and have no inclination for v8 grunt or lpg conversions. having 3 young kids and two large dogs does not lend itself to a 90, but nothing a decent roofrack wont help with (for luggage, not to have two german shepherds in goggles 'wingwalking').
good luck with search

Hy Matt,
This is an old chestnut that has been done to death on many a forum. I don't run a Landy at the moment, but have spent many hours in both 90s and 110s. As a general rule, if in doubt, go for the big one. I think you will find that it is only a matter of time before you need the extra carrying capacity for somthing.
I was involved in looking for a Landy for a mate a couple of years ago, and over a period of time looking, it became apparent that 110s were generaly a bit cheaper than 90s year for year (I found this a surprise at that time).
Off-Road there seems to be little to choose between them, yes I've heard all the arguments about ramp-over angles etc. but in practice, unless you are intending to use the vehicle for all-out off-road competition you will not find many 90s where a 110 wont go !
You can't do an L.P.G. conversion on a diesel, it needs spark plugs and all that rubbish so if you can, stick with the diesel and I doubt if you will be dissapointed.
Add to all this the fact that the wife will be pleased and you must go for the 110.
All the best bud,let us know how you go on.
Cruisermik.
