Hi all

I am new to landrovers and have just bought myself a 52 plate landrover discovery td5 with 60000 miles on the clock and full landrover history and I am looking to do a couple of upgrades to it. I am just looking for some views/peoples experience on what I am going to do. The mods are listed below.

1. Egr removal. I am going to buy the kit from td5alive and fit this. What improvements will I see from this? At the same time am I better removing the inlet and intercooler and cleaning these out as well?

2. k&n panel filter

3. ebc grooved and cross drilled discs and ebc green stuff pads from paddock spares

4. new full stainless steel exhaust and downpipe from td5 alive

5. new larger intercooler and silicone hoses

6. new ecu from twisted performance

7. turbo booster from td5 alive

Has anyone carried out any of these modifications and if so have they seen any improvement? or are there some you wouldn't recommend me doing. As i said I am new to landrovers and I am just looking for some more performance and improved braking.

cheers ryan

Why? Are they better to tune? or do they have more power to start with? I honestly dont know as im just new to landrovers.

ignore that... the TD5 can be tuned, but it'll cost ya

just an EGR blank and a ECU remap will get it in excellent shape.
however, if you want a sports car... sell yer disco!

Why not get TD5 Alive to do your ECU as well as the other stuff? That would save bother and may be a better bet as TD5 Alive may give better results doing the works. They come highly recommended.

I was thinking of the K&N but some say it lets more dust into the engine so I didn't bother.

It also seems like you can't go wrong with OEM parts for most things brakes included. Britpart may be the cheapest but sometimes the quality is lacking. I think I've read that EBC are good.

EGR removal makes a slight difference but is worth doing regardless.

Cleaning the intercooler is on the service schedule.

Do some searching and you will find loads of info on these items.

It would also be a good idea to get your car on diagnostics to make sure it is running right. Mine was down on power when I got it and I didn't realise it.

I had a gunged up MAP sensor (inlet manifold) and sticking turbo wastegate. Both dead easy fixes. I have 120K though so may be a lesser issue on a lower milage car. Worth checking though.

A RAVE workshop CD off Ebay is a good idea and a Haynes manual.

Cheers

its just been in (and still is) in the garage connected to there diagnostics computer and the only fault it came up with was the drivers side seatbelt pre tensioner which I knew about plus what i thought was a squeeling belt in the engine bay turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold which is being replaced under warranty.

I think i'll go for the filter and egr replacement and then the brakes and an ecu remap first to see what that does. Hopefully that should make a differance on the going and stopping.

the egr just needs blanking... get a plate off ebay for a fiver. keep soaking WD40 on the bolts for a few days till it arrives.

the ECU remap will be the best money you spend, as will fitting cruise control if you aint got it.

Flushing the intercooler makes a difference, but a big job for little return on a TD5.

the brakes on a TD5 are pretty good to start with... so your tyre choice will mean better stopping.

yeah I have cruise control fitted. All the bolts on the manifold and surrounding components will be easy enough to get off as they are all being replaced the now. I take it to remove the intercooler is a huge job? I wonder if im better just leaving it till I fit a new intercooler then.

Get in touch with Gary Wood at Td5 Alive. He knows what he is doing and you will be blown away with the results. He will tune the vehicle to how you want it and the improved driveability and performance is amazing. If you go as far as a stage 2 tune a Disco2 V8 would have a struggle to keep up with it. His ECU mapping is far superior to a clone tunning box that most companies are selling. Do it right once and you will save a lot of money. Plus you will find the Disco will have improved fuel economy, if you can be strong enough to keep your right foot of the go pedal that is. Mind you the big gaping smile your going to have on your dial may cause a lot of excess drag and lower the MPG's a bit.I don't think that smile ever goes away. You will find that big hole at low revs will disappear as well.
Read his feedback and see what others say as well.

I live in New Zealand and I had the confidence to deal with him. I had a tunning box fitted to my Td5 and was reasonably pleased with it but Gary's ECU mapping has blown me away.
