hello all,

I’m looking at buying myself my first defender.

Whilst I have a modest budget it’s not really set at the minute.

I know that I want a 110 sw age not really a problem and as long as it’s not been killed by rust I am good with doing most renovation work myself.

Any suggestions/ cars for sales or hidden gems please do let me know.

Thanks for your help and I have no doubt this forum has a wealth of knowledge

I really wanted a 90 and ended up with a 110 csw.
Still loved it to bits but wish i'd waited until a nice 90 came along.
So if you have your mind set on a 110 then stick with it and you will probably find anyway that they can be a little easier to get hold of too.
I'll be selling mine in the new year, because I want room for when I find a nice 90 or series to work on.
You need a budget though and to get something half decent to start with you are probably talking 4k+.

I fancied a series or 90/110/defender but couldn’t justify the money for a good one. I ended up with a 300tdi disco, was lucky to find a very clean one locally and absolutely honestly I wouldn’t swap it. I’ve probably spent £2k or so on it since purchase but it’s now really well sorted, definitely more comfortable and nearly as capable.

My Disco 2 would need a lot of work to get it anywhere near to the basic ability of my defender but I grant you the comfort is far greater.
My point is I wouldn't compromise on what I initially desired or you are forever wondering what could have been.
A Defender is a fantastic vehicle and you can have so much fun with it.
An older 110csw has a pathetic second row seating, a rubbish heater and a load of other niggles, not to mention the wipers are awful too (all of which go away with a Disco).
Everyone needs to have at least owned a defender or series imho.

Definitely agree there if you can get what you want you really need to, I could only afford a wreck at the time so when a very good D1 came up it sold itself and I’ve not looked back. You’ll find loads of good advice on here, rust is the thing to watch for on almost all Land rovers, if you can find a solid one and keep it that way then the rest is relatively straightforward.

Everything about my 109 series 3 station wagon is awful but that's the whole point of owning it. Powered steering, good brakes, comfy suspensions and seats are for girls.

Right up there with this little beauty from a couple of weeks ago

You are going for the most expensive defender, the 110 sw.
You should get more for your money if you lose the sw bit.
What engine are you looking for.

I got a 110 SW and the only folks who ever go in the back are the daft dogs, and they love it as they can woof at anything in a flouro jacket, tbh I weren't keen on being in the back when I had to for work. Loads of value in buying a 110 panel back or double cab utility. Don't buy the first one you see, and google the 10 biggest things to look for when buying a defender...start with the chassis vin, engine number versus V5 etc everything else can be repaired.

Other than that, best advice is to open your wallet.
