Long term project, 110 station wagon.

I've just bought my first Land Rover a 110 station wagon which I bought blind on eBay.
162016409665 if anybody want's to have a look.

I went down this path after being advised against doing what I want to do, to a S3.

I'm not sure if I've paid over the odds, only time will tell! It's been delivered home and frustratingly, I'm now away working for a couple of weeks but, a friend who has an early S1 who got me into Land Rovers has had a look and informs me that she'll need lots of love!

The plan has always been to have a 200/300tdi lump with an auto box to make driving a little easier, especially for the wife and for it to run on WVO which I have access to to reduce the running costs.
Whatever I bought, it was my intention to go down the route of a new galvanised chassis and from what my friend informs me, it would also be as well to get a new bulkhead as well.

Apparently the description on eBay is wrong and I thought it had a 200tdi in but apparently it has a 2.5 td but, on the scale of things, it's the least of my worries.

Once I have the new chassis, I'm going to start building it up with new suspension etc and then fit a new drive train before looking at sorting the body out and swapping it over.

Sounds easy doesn't it!

Looks fair for that money to be honest.

They can fetch silly figures, even for scrap.

Is the chassis really unrescuable?

Any pics of the chassis, bulkhead and engine bay?

The bodies are always the very last thing to go on a landy.

If it is good, 19j are ok, but slowish in a 110SW. If it is very worn, watch out for trouble. Preventative maintenance is better than a diesel runaway.

Looking at the photos on the auction... I dont know the 2.5td that you mention, but that certainly looks like a 200tdi to me?

dont worry about the money. 500 quid here or there is nothing when it comes to what you will, ultimately, end up spending!

Ok, I haven't had chance to look myself but only going on what I've been told?

3rd photo on the auction page. looks like a 300, but with the turbo in the 'wrong' place.

like i say, i dont know 200s well, so wouldnt bet my life on it, but it sure looks like a 200 to me. even has the plastic cyclonic oil sepperator on the side, which i doubt the the earlier engine had.

it was the pre cursor to the "tdi"

2.5 turbo diesel. Original engines in 90/110, defs had Tdi. They weren't the best, although mine is ok, read up on the forum about them.
The chap that looked at the ebay ad says it has a Tdi, though^^^^^^^^^^^^.

I'm hopefully going to be able to pop back home at the weekend so I'll try and get some photos.

This is a 19J. 2.5 Turbo Diesel. No intercooler, no ladder frame under the block, cast iron head instead of alloy. Quite different to a Tdi.

It's definitely a defender 200tdi. If you plan to go auto the engine will need to be a good runner and with a bit more power squeezed out of it especially in a 110 station wagon.

Yup, looks like a 200 to me too.

Bulkhead looks like it might be a bit tender . . . .

Would the 300tdi be significantly better with an auto box?

Not as good as a V8!

Power output and torque is pretty much the same. So not worth the work. Land Rover tuned the 300tdi discos with auto box to about 120horse power which is more than achievable with a 200tdi. Increase fuel and boost, larger intercooler, maybe some silicone hoses to reduce turbo lag.

Is the auto box really needed? Keeping the standard gearbox makes the vehicle feel more lively and is cheaper with a lot less work to make it look factory. If you're up for the challenge then go ahead and post lots of pictures.

I'm always dubious about tweaking and modding things, I'd much rather put a standard engine in with a standard gearbox and have it 'factory'. As I'm going to get a new 110 chassis, I believe from the limited reading I've done so far that I can get the new chassis set up to receive the engine and gearbox of my choice? I've also seen a 300tdi auto discovery locally as spares/repair due to corrosion. I'm tempted just to get it and use as the mechanical donor and sell off what I don't need from it. That's not such a daft idea is it?
