I would get the army record card from REME then stamp up the chassis to match and quote the military reg plates and ask for an age related plate. You could cancel the q plate. Its legit to stamp up the chassis to match the millitary records as this is a like for like replacment and the DVLA recognise that Lanr Rovers can and do get replacment chassis and all chassis must have a number. You should have the body plate with the body numbers and build numbers so you can show that this is the same vehicle. Push it a bit as it would not get a Q plate nowdays. My 1970 LWB was on a 1978 plate as it was registered when it left the Army. DVLA changed it to a 1970 plate at no charge. It was already historic as they had the 1970 build date but with a q you need to get the LR build date not the reg date - bear in mind this is not only tax, its also MOT and emissions zone exemption (a big deal here as we are near the M25) and its lookign like Bristol, Reading, Birmingham and Edinburgh may follow..
The problem with claiming a replacement chassis is that DVLA require the paperwork to show that it is a new replacement, (this from the DVLA website). Shoots buying a second-hand galv chassis in the head doesn't it?
PS: I don't have the body plate either...

I wonder how many cars are out there with non-original engines that the DVLA don't know about, sometimes it's easier not to tell them everything.

So there are a few more steps! Can you re -make a replacment body plate with the correct numbers from the military record card and show how you did that, then the body remains unchanged. The chassis is 2nd hand but new to the vehicle and if it has no stamps then you could stamp it up to match the military record and declare that. A problem if the chassis does have numbers as you would need to trace what happened to the original reg. It can be done, many yeara aog I used to help a guy who rebuilt Bugattis, some were smashed wrecks that had lain in a field for 60 years. The engine block would be cast new and the whole chassis would be a new fabrication with a few old lugs but they would end up with orginal numbers and a period plate.

My Daily at the mo is a 73 LWB s3 diesel safari. The Defender Tax over here is over a grand so its off the road. I have a SWB but it needs some love and I found it to small for the family, so she is also parked up. Had a freelander for a few months, again tax was nr €800 and it was trouble final straw was the clutch bearing so I scrapped it.
The safari is getting tired but I need to get my RRC done and on the road before I can do any major work on her.

LWB with plenty of patina!

Short. 2a heaven.
Once the fuel leak and water pumps sorted. I’m going to fit some bigger tyres and hopefully take her to the beaulie 70th anniversary meet up and forest drive for birthday fun.

Re your question Daz28, it is an orginal Dormobile roof for a Land Rover, I suspect from around the late 60's that I have fitted to my 1970 LWB. I was going to make my own pop-top and had been researching designs whe i found this one in the small adds. Couldn't beleive it as they very rarely come up for sale. It was in a state but repariable - the steel rots inside the fibreglass, the hoops rot and the steel frame for the cut out had to be replaced. I made all the parts from ally, lighter and a lot cheaper than buying parts. Having now done that i think you could quite easily cut and fit another top to fit a Series and make it look good when its done. Its worth the effort because you can stand up with room to spare which makes getting dressed and washing so much easier. We use it to sleep 2, how they ever sold them as 4 berth I have no idea!
