Hello Everyone,

I've had my 01 TD4 freelander for about 6 months and apart from the usual probs (which a very good mechanic has fixed) she's running great. Apart from a demisting problem which has got very bad in the last few weeks.
I have checked the following myself
Pollen filter - removed completely for now
Rear door seals - All ok (no water in rear cubby hole)

Someone told me about the air-con drain hose can be blocked, but in the haynes manual I have I cant find it.
Could someone please point me in the right direction please,
Many thanks

Hi, and :welcome2:

The air-con drain pipe is about 10cm long with a flattened end hanging down just towards the centre of the car from the passenger side steering rack mount.

If you stand beside the passenger side wing you can see it easily - and there is just enough room to reach your arm down to feel the pipe and squeeze the end of it. Highly unlikely that it will be blocked by mud etc - but if the vehicle has been off-road in really deep mud then it's a 'maybe'.

If you've removed the pollen filter have you left the cover off? If you have then your heating and de-misting system will be very inefficient. If you feel the need to have no pollen filter then the solution is to cut away the filter part and re-fit the cover bit with the screws.

On some FLs if you select max de-mist the air-con comes on automatically. I've never checked for this on mine as when I need demisting of the glass I make sure that I have the air-con on and heat at maximum, making sure the re-circ is off.

Some folks are reluctant to have air-con and heat at the same time as they think of it only as an air-cooler system. Running it with heat on at the same time means the air coming into the vehicle is being dried, thus reducing the condensation.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the location. No the pollen filter cover was replaced and when I put demist on yes the air-conus on, but the problem seems worse which is why I thought that the drain plug was blocked. I have checked the interior light for water from the aerial as well and the footwells being bone dry.
It's the last thing I can think of before conceding defeat and asking a 'stealer' however as ours is on its 3 week trying to get me a spare key I don't have much faith in them. Any other thought?

The fresh air/recirculated air flap is driven by an electric motor, can you hear it working, it's near the pollen filter.

No I can't hear the recirculated air flap move, but I do hear a different noise from the fan itself which I presume means that the flap is moving.

I had the heating set to full heat, no aircon, and 1/2 screen 1/2 floor and very little misting today, mostly on the rear windows, whereas yesterday had it on full heat, aircon on full to the screen and the condensation was running off the passenger window!

I will check the pipe in the morning and report back.

After not looking on Sunday due to the amount of rain falling not just vertically, but horizontally in Donegal!
so I decided to have a look this morning and couldn't see the blasted pipe - is it possible for someone to post a picture and I can check. Could the pipe be missing or broken off?
thanks again

I'll try and get a pic on tomorrow afternoon - but the weather here is much the same as with you, and the forecast is for worse and colder to come.

It is possible that the pipe has come adrift or even squashed behind the steering rack mountings.

The drain pipe was missing on my TD4, meaning the air con was draining into the footwell.

Dealer failed miserably to get me a replacement, so I've pushed some garden hose onto the outlet, which appears to be working.

Hi scanlanlee,

Here are some pics of where the air-con drain outlet is to be found in the engine bay.

I have no idea where the pipe comes from, but I expect it to be somewhere behind the heater on the cabin side of the bulkhead - perhaps the condensate is dripping down onto or behind your carpet if the pipe is missing.

Happy hunting!
