Limp mode

Hello. This is my first post, and hopping someone can help. We have a 06 td4 auto. The temperature gauge has never sat at half way, like i keep being told it should. In the winter, with the heat on. It drives really well, and the temperature gauge sits just above the first mark. Now the weather is getting hotter, and we don't have the heater on. The gauge is getting to a quarter high. The car go's in to limp mode. Drive around with the heater on to keep the gauge lower Its fine. Anyone got any ideas to what it could b. Its been plugged in, and it says fule line issue. Its had new pumps and sensors

My guess is the previous owner broke/removed the thermostat to mask another problem. What car do you have? Suggest you ask in the relevent section for the best audience
