Good afternoon everyone
Wondered if anyone could help, my side Lights, main lights and dash illumination don't seem to work, my high beam flash works, indicators work break lights etc all work, I've checked fuses under seat and the ones behind the gear stick, I've bypassed the pink relay and swapped the light stalk for a known working one these all seem fine but still no lights does anyone have any advice/ideas please.
Regards Robert

Which stalk have you swapped? the indicator one or the headlight switch? I have had both fail resulting in the lights not working. The headlight switch itself can melt the contacts deeper into the plastic they do do not touch. Might be worth pulling the switch and checking you have 12V to and from that before moving to other things.

Thanks for your reply, I replaced the side light/main light stalk, does the high beam/ indicator stalk affect the side light and main light operation???

Yes but I cannot remember the specifics I will need to check. But the power goes through the main beam stalk after the switch before going to the lights. I had my headlights fail and it turned out to be the main beam switch, but I cannot remember if side lights worked or not. flash worked but not either headlights or main beam.

The last time this happened it was the pink relay which I swapped I tried the bypass method to check this again but all seems fine, is the main beam relay on the steering column ??

I never tire of saying this, but it's a Defender a black wire will behind this, always is.
could be anything, is is Joe Lucas after all!

But if the flash still works it is unlikely to be an earth issue, my money is still on the switch and if the headlight switch has been replaces that just leaves main beam.

Going to go borrow multi meter to try a couple more things, thanks for the advice will let you know the result.

But have you checked the lighting (30A IIRC) fuse in the engine compartment? Think it is in the back right side of the engine compartment near the bulkhead (as you look in to the engine bay).

Thanks for the reply, I did not know about this fuse I will have a look shortly, ps can't seem to open your pic after downloaded

What about this

I have power coming in to the side/headlight switch but as soon as I engage the switch to on position there is no power indicating on multimeter

In that case it would seem to indicate that there is a high resistance wire / bad or corroded connection in the supply leading to the switch. Ideally you need to find that 30A fuse and check the voltage on it with the lights switched on & off to see if it is constant, if it is that would indicate the header as being a the most likely fault (they are basically just big terminal blocks). That wiring diagram is for a 1999 TD5 so would expect it to be the same or very close.

This would appear to indicate that the engine fuse box may actually be under the seat!! You may have looked at them already but do the check with a meter.

Thank you for the information and advice you have given me, I have checked the 30amp fuse under drivers seat and all seems good (checked with multimeter ) would a fault with the indicator/horn & highbeam stalk effect me been able to turn on side & head lights ??
