light tapping engine.

Hi, my 1996 bmw diesel p38a is making a light tapping noise from start up to turning off, it rises with engine revs and dies with engine no revs but is constantly there, Ive used engine oil flush and refilled and changed filter, think it might be tappets but not sure engine has approx 165k on its clock, any ideas, cheers.
