Hi folks! Freelander 2003 TD4
lift_pump_maybe.jpg

Discovered this device just in front of the drivers side rear wheel. I think it's the Lift Pump and Filter assembly. It has received a blow from underneath at some time and has started leaking a lot of diesel all over the rear of the vehicle. Apart from begin rather smelly, this is probably quite dangerous!

There appears to be two silver cylindrical components. The upper one with wires attached (Pump?) and another longer one underneath with (I think) an earth wire attached to it (Filter?). The fuel is coming out of the longer cylinder. What's in the round black thing with the two quick release fittings on top? Another filter?

The whole thing was flopping around and only attached by one rusty metal bracket towards the rear. Towards the front of the plastic tray assembly are the remains of some pop rivets. Should there have been another bracket here? Has anyone got any pictures of one on their vehicle I could compare with mine?

Many thanks,
Andy

be the ' sedimenter ' ...
it collects sediment and water from the fuel ..
should be drained once in a while ..

try a forum / site search ( top right of page )
been quite a few lp.fuel pump / filter housing pics posted over the years

there *might* be something in this forum as well ..

Thanks hd3. I've now read a great amount of stuff about the fuel pump and filter..!
One more question
Is the setup in the picture correct?
The arrow on the filter points in the same direction as the arrow on the plastic casing?
Many thanks,
Andy

PS: What's the bike? :)

looks to be right .. going by the haynes-manual pic :)
besides .. the housing looks to have "fuel direction" by its arrow ..
( not changed the filter myself .. so not seen it first hand )

Is it a restoration of yours?

restoration ? .. er no .. not quite
if you saw that avatar pic .. closer .. you'd see the machine were a bit tatty ..
i'd just bought it .. prior to enhancing it's qualities ..
pic not in u.k. :) .. be the mideast ..
common bikes were old single cyl. bsa's from the wwII era .. and bmw's from just after wwII
most of the bsa's ( 500cc sigle cyl. mobile vibrator ) were converted into trikes ..
used to haul light goods about the cities 'n towns 'n villages
less common were bikes newer than 1960's models ..
and up to date models were very scarce .. due to extravagant import duty ..

bike mechanics .. uncommon :)

anyhow .. bought that bmw .. then at sometime soon was told about a swiss mechanic ..
of the motorcycling variety .. bit of a nutter for speed ..
got together with him .. stripped the engine .. went thru all the mechanical stuff .. suspension etc etc ..
then re-painted it .. ( not in original colours / style ) .. added a better 'bum-pad' for any passenger ..
re-newed the rider's saddle ..
( we were going to try and put a 700cc job in it .. from an old bmw car .. but never got around to it ..
( 1 of these .. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histo...00_coupé_at_Schaffen-Diest_Fly-drive_2013.JPG
( air cooled boxer ..
rode the bike for about 3 years .. was great .. never faltered off-road .. up steep inclines etc etc .. in med. heat
smooth motor .. fairly comfortable position for the rider .. reliable .. stable on the road ..
bit slow though :) .. think top end was not far above 60 mph
gearing were short as it were designed to add a sidecar
sold it for ( usa ) .. $2k

wish i still owned it ..
( edited to add ) .. here's the only pic i've of it
after it had been taken apart then cleaned up
53bmwb.jpg
machine behind it be one of the bsa 500cc s.cylnder jobs ..

saw 1 similar not long back .. looked like an early 60's model
but restored to new condition .. probably worth a few £££ now :)

Nice. I like the history. I have a old BSA. Somewhere...

Looking at the pump assembly I've concluded that the old filter (Dated 2013) was installed the wrong way round.
I don't know enough to say if it was this that caused the leakage or the apparent damage to the plastic cradle thing.
Couldn't see any holes in the filter casing or anywhere else. I don't know. Maybe a pipe just popped off a bit?
I put it all back on without the cradle and ran it up. Can't see any leaks. I'll build it up into the cradle tomorrow and fit it all back on.

It's a Land Rover after all. They do funny stuff.
