Left hand side Main beam not working

Hi All and happy new year!

Defender 300tdi 110CSW. 1995

Recently noticed my main (not dipped) beam on the LHS was not working so swapped the bulb but still no joy.

Checked the fuse (should have done that first :rolleyes:) and it was blown. Swapped it, and it blew again!

Does anyone know where I should start to look for the problem?

the cable running along the inner wing from head light look for damage where cable insulation has been rubbing against wing
 
@mystery , do you have a diagram showing Fuse 2, basically clock, fog light, internal light?

noticed the clock was not working and now this fuse now keeps blowing!

OK, so I found the dodgy wire to the horn that was blowing that fuse but I cannot find anything in the wing that looks like it might be shorting the LHS main beam anywhere.

Do I really need to take the wing off or is there somewhere else that could be causing the problem.

Basically, it blows when I put the stalk into main beam. So could it be the stalk?
 
is it still blowing fuse 2 remove fuse 14 left hand main beam and fuse 13 right hand main beam this will eliminate the wiring going through left hand and right hand wings and the head lights
if it still blows then the problem is the UW blue white cable from column switch to either the main beam warning lamp behind dash or the cable where it goes to the fuse box C580-25 is damaged or nicked
or the switch it self very unlikely as it would have to ground it's self or the UW cable to have detached its self and is touching earth easily checked by looking blow steering column at connector
if fuse 2 does not blow when 13 and 14 removed then the wing wiring routes very unlikely as it should blow one of these fuses before fuse 2
so have you at any time had reason to remove dash or fuse box and inadvertently trapped or damaged a cable

Hi @mystery , no not removed the dash or fuse box. we have had some serious rain over the past month so could it be water ingress?

I will try the fuse suggestion above! thanks!

weird thing is, I did get it going a few days ago but in sorting out the horn fuse, it went again! I'm sure it's the wiring coming out from the wing into the space where the light clusters are but just can't find a damaged cable!
 
You need to test continuity from live to earth after the switch, unplug the head lamp and switch first, if you can disconnect from the main harness all the better. You are looking for a short. You need to ascertain where the fault is.
