No need to bother draining all the oil out. It will stop eventually of its own accord.....

both of mine were damaged / leaking.
i welded up the cracks as best i could, then plastered it with chemical metal.
good thick layer of waxoyl over the top, re-fill with oil and job's a good un.
gonna ger replacement diff pans eventually, then fit diff guards to stop then gettin damaged again.
