leaking sunroof

First time i have taken the car out after heavy rain and i got soaked! is there a fix for this or do i have to get the mastic out.... can you still get new seals or is there a secret to staying dry?

seals still available on flea-bay around £15 mark. Mine leaked just stuck it in with mastic until such time as I get round to some new seals.

Try this lot for seals

is yours early pop up non sliding or later tilt and slide because all the ones on ebay are for the tilt and slide ^^ Aforementioned website has the ones for the early pop ups at 32.19 inc vat (Part no RTC6481)

from here they look like the pop up ones, they have a round windey thing at the back of them and the rear sits a little proud. i think i'll need to order one as the family have got to use it this weekend while i'm in wales with the family car.... the wife should get used to it mind, she used to have a MR2 T bar.

Check with them, I'm told the seal is the same for both manual and electric.

same as mine then think they are the right seals but description slightly wrong. And for when you come to get them out.

are you sure it's the sunroof. Mine was leaking and it turned out to be the seals at the top side windows at tha back or the roof. water gather between headlining and roof each side of the sunroof and comes out seat belt holes when going round corners.

You might find the drain outlet on the sunroof has broken off.

And yet another place that leaks water into the footwells, the drain trough in front of the windscreen. Check the mastic sealing at the very edges of this trough, below where the bonnet hinges are, up against the wings.
The seams leak through here.

I have a 2001 Td5 - last June I had it parked facing downhill on a fairly steep incline and the rear sunroof soaked the rear seat and carpet .
After that I was careful not to park facing downhill and haven't had a leak since .
At the time I read a lot of artcles on leaking Discovery sunroofs and found that
(1) a guy who had repaired a number of them had never come across a blocked draintube ;
(2) quite a number of them leaked not around the glass but between the actual vehicle roof itself and the frame of the sunroof - some were cured by running a bead of silicone around the outer edge where the frame meets the roof ; on others the only solution was to drop the headlining , take out the whole unit and refit with a new bead of silicone ; apparently the old mastic used at the time of manufacture dries up and can allow water in ; this is what I hope to do later on in the year .

I fitted new seals ( of ebay) to both sunroofs of my sisters's 98 300 Tdi last year but the front one still leaks a little .
The job wasn't too bad - removed the glass , cleaned up everything and fitted the seals .Then gave them a good coating of Vaseline - silicone grease was suggested but I couldn't get any .

I have recently had problems on my TD5 and replaced both roof light seals and guess what - not a bit of difference, I then decided to mastic round the curved roof window glasses, you've guessed it, no change. Bearing in mind I had already cleared the drainage tubes with a nylon "fish" - the answer in the end was the joint between the roof and the upper sunroof plastic frame, I waited for a nice not day and used about a dozen or so flat blade screwdrivers to ease the lip up, at the same time drying any moisture with kitchen roll then gradually work your way round the frame with a mastic gun ensuring that you get a good coating between the bodywork and the frame. After application clean up using plenty of rags and white spirit. Its a messy job but has cured my leaking problem - just make sure that you use a mastic that does'nt dry out. I used black gutter seal from B&Q

Try rubbing vaseline into the rubbers, it makes them nice and suppple again.

My TD5 was leaking from here as well. I ran some black electrical tape over the join, right round both sunroofs and it's now sorted.

I still had a leak into the footwells. I think I have this sorted as well. At the top of the windscreen there was a gap just below the lip of the roof drainage channel (gutter?) on both sides of the car. I plugged this with some black gutter seal and all seems well. Nearly time to put all the carpets back in after 6 months.

I just found a similar problem, i found a small leak in the top left hand corner of the windscreen, when i looked outside i saw the rubber seal had parted slightly at the channel. So i sealed it with sillicone, 2 days later i found water was coming in at the centre of the windscreen, so i had to reseal the windscreen seal where it meets the body work.

Whislt I was at it as a preventative measure i also re sealed around the outsides of both sunroofs seals where they meet the body.

I am also going to seal both sunroofs completely with sillicone to stop any future water problems. lets face i never ever open them anyway so why not.
