Freelander 1 leaking aircon

Just sorted out the broken wiring to the compressor and took it to get it regassed , first of all it was totally empty of gas which is strange because just before christmas i took it to be regassed some were else and they said it had no leaks ?? Anyway the machine started to fill the system with gas and down at the bottom some were near to the compressor there was a loud hissing and what looked like steam was coming from the bottom of the car .Does any one know if there is a pipe or something in that area that is known to be a prob or could it be the compressor its self ? As soon as it stops raining i will take off the sump cover and have a look but with it being a gas i don't know if i will be able to see anything

I use a mobile air con service, they put a dye in the system so you can easily spot leaks ( with an ultraviolet lamp )
Ask quick fit if they do
If they know as usually crap lol.

Seriously though I really think aircon should only be looked at by a pro.
Thats all they do so know every make of cars weaknesses etc.
Sounds to me like the condenser is shot.
Mine had a small leak, he told me which one's he recommended and was happy to fit that make.
From memory a new one was only about £50 and he wanted the same to refit.
Got free regass as he said he failed to spot original leak.
 
Thanks for the advice i don't think it s the condenser it is in the same area as the compressor so fingers crossed it will be a rubber seal on one of the pipes but knowing my luck i doubt it:p

I know what you mean !
I think I used we chill any car .com
They come to your house or at your work.
They charge around £60 but the beauty of that is they will tell you where its leaking from and how much to repair/replace etc.
Major components cost hundreds so yes I hope its something simple.
If its just a pipe or connection they will fix it on-site.
It's up to you how much you want to spend for the four days of hot weather lol.

Four Days !!! that many :eek: or is that just wishful thinking:D i don't know if its just me but i hate it when there is something on my car that does not work it does my head in:( , i have to get to the bottom of it .......And before you say it i shouldn't have brought a Freelander then:ptime will tell

Any leaks should have shown up when the system was evacuated. They are supposed to hold the vacuum to check for leaks before adding fresh gas. It's actually an offence to release AC gasses into the environment, which is why they are supposed to check the systems integrity first.
 
There was a lcd screen on the machine that said something like"vacuum complete leak detected " and then it stopped , to be fair i think the system was only pressurized enough to see where the leak was coming from

I know what you mean about things not working, however firstly I don't think I'll live long enough to correct all my faults and secondly I couldn't afford it !
As said we all love em and I've decided to slowly get all my faults rectified as long as she passes her inspection next week without much expense.
After all she was a free vehicle and even if it costs me £500 that's cheap motoring for a whole year.
 
If it's the pipes or one of the seals where the pipes join the compressor it will be a pain to do. The joints at the compressor suffer from dissimilar metal corrosion and I found them impossible to remove at the compressor end. I ended up just taking the compressor off and cutting the pipes at the flexible section. I never bothered refitting it. No need for aircon in this part of the world.

Why is nothing ever easy on these cars:Dyou start what you think is going to be a simple task and it ends up costing an arm and a leg:p I will let you know
 
If it's any consolation they are easy to get to at least. Just take the undertray off and they are right there at the front/bottom of the engine bay just above the tray.
