Morning.

Just discovered a very large oil leak on a 2.0 XEDI 1999 L series.

Driven yesterday for 40 miles fine.

This morning no oil on drive, started vehicle to warm up noticed about 500mls of oil on drive. Checked oil levels and topped up.

Drove again this morning for 15 miles and on stopping oil is piddling out from the plastic guard over sump, oily spray back on tail gate.

Limped home further 15 miles and on arrival home lots more oil and oil light starting to flicker on. Oil had now started to appear inside the engine bay.

Car still running fine coolant as normal no overheating or strange noises.

Just about to get underneath to have a better look.

Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone have any ideas please?

Many thanks

Andy

Just had a look taken top cover off engine top half is fine no evidence of any leaks the oil spray in the engine bay is on the right hand side as you look at the engine, Most of the oil is on the bottom of the engine.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the plastic cover underneath over sump it looks like rivets can anyone advice?

you have to remove the whole frame that the cover is rivited too,
the job looks worse than it is, effectivly you remove the whole alluminium sump gaurd with plastic cover attached
takes 5 mins
good luck

Could be the oil filter has become loose, it is a common problem with the l series, and is actually on the landrover advisory schedule.
If it is tighten fully plus a further half a turn( i think ) just make sure its really tight,.
Mine started dripping and thats all it was, so if it has become very loose it would cause the said problem.
Hope this helps,
D

8 bolts for sump cover
2 at rear
4 on suspension arms
2 under frt crossmember

Mine did this after a good run, replaced the Pressure limiting filter/valve and been ok since, Not sure if L series has a limiting valve though

Agree to check the oil filter first, Subaru's can also suffer the same problem with the filter coming loose and spraying oil everywhere.
