laning trips

Just thought I would share with you some of my laning trips.

Hope some of you will do the same.

Hi norm, i'm also from in accy, and i can unfortunatly tell you that there aren't any lanes without travelling to the Lakes or Wales. We do a little bit of driving at Briercliffe on the driving days which is pretty good, but a little expensive, if you do it every month..
If you fancy a trip to do a bit of laneing i'm sure something can be arranged
Maybe we could meet up with Fitz again in wales?? i'm sure graham wilky will join us...
Or if you fancy a weekend of it, a few of us are heading to LRO Driffield show next month. There's a great offroad course there, i did it last year and it was great....

There are also several good lanes in the Yorkshire Dales lads. You just need a Land Ranger O.S. map, (marks all the BOATs) and call in at the Council offices in Skipton to look at thje definitive map, and in the words of Arthur Daily, 'The World's your lobster.'

Thanks for the replies, Firstly, I is a bit green to this, pardon the pun, unintentional.


I know what Ordinance Survey map is, but not heard of Land ranger, what’s the best place to get this from as I’m in Blackpool and Yorkshire is over there, I did mean to say east. What is a BOATS, please no silly stuff we`re above that, well I think, wife disagrees.

As far as green laning in Wales, well fun fun fun. The landy show. Two questions where do you stay and will they allow other makes of 4x4s.

Yeh they will allow other makes, cruisermick has a landcruiser for some reason ha ha, and is coming. And as far as where to stay its tents or if your really posh a caravan. Should be a good laugh,

Yes I do have a landy its a series 3 ex-military (my baby) unit which served with the UDR until me`s got it. It was in a bit of a state and I have put many Hours of work into it putting it into it former glory. It now needs a restoration job on the bulk head as the metal maggot has decided to take roost. As I am a member of MVT this was use to go to the shows. My net toy hopefully will be an Abbot, you can make green lanes with that where ever you like. I however don’t think Charlie & Parker bowls like having a track through their back garden.



The family toy, and what I would use for some nice leisurely country run would be our Nissan Navara, a serious competitor for any Landcruiser, animal, warrior, hilux etc etc.



So where are the nearest green lanes to me? It must be wife proof, I’m not allowed to spill her coffee as she is looking in horror down a 200` drop. She does not mind having to wear a sports bra on the chance she might get a black eye!

Hi norm, Your nearest lanes are prob those in Wales or the lakes. BOAT stands for Byway Open To All Traffic, and these ar ethe lanes that you can drive. Tey are clearly marked on OS maps. Best thing to do is get hold of a map or two and take a look. Or arrange a weekend laning with us and we can all learn together

As a footnote, please be advised, Land Cruisers do not have any competition, serious or otherwise.
Quite simply, they are on an altogether higher plane.

O.K. Norm,
Land Ranger is just one of the latest series of 1" O.S. maps.
If you look in the legend at the base of the map, you should find a funny little dotted type line which represents a BOAT. (See below).
They are available anywhere where you can get o.s. maps.
BOATs are 'Green Lanes' (stands for Byway Open To All Traffic).
From a legal point of view, they are no different to the M1, M6 or any other road.
It's just that they are not surfaced. Oh, and you also need full documentation as well, ie. driving license, insurance test cert. and road tax.

Pst, your day dreaming or one needs to return the blinkers back to the horse. The Land cruisers belong to the gentry, lets face it, and the gentry can hardly be seen gallivanting around the country lanes especially with us commoners, its just not cricket old boy!

I have never seen Land cruisers with a parachute I’ve seen plenty of landys go out the back of a Charlie 130!!!

This little venture into the green lanes, is it better to go to the lakes or where? err, one moment got ear ache, ops it’s the boss,

Before you say any more about Cruisers Norm, have a good look in the gallery.
There are many Pickies in there, posted by yours truly, depicting Cruisers, both mine, and friends (but all driven by me) at home and abroad and I assure you I am not of the landed gentry, nor am I dreaming, nor have I the faintest interest in cricket,....... 'old boy'.
As for throwing Land Rovers out of the back of Charlies, well I'll refrain from the obvious comment.
