Hi

I am new to the world of landys. Have been a classic VW owner for over 10 years with 2 campers and a karmann ghia over the years.

Have now wanted a change so looking to buy my first Defender, I cant face driving a boring car!

Am after a 90, was wondering what kind of things I should be looking for when looking at used landies.

Being a fan of classics, I know to have a good poke around underneath, looking at bottom of doors, seals, anywhere basically water will drip into.

Specifically:

I see parts are really abundant and cheaper than VWs. After having a lot of looking around I see that there are loads with mileages way over 150,000. Is this a problem? Are there particular problems with cars having such high mileages?

What parts are expensive to replace and as a result should avoid cars that need that part replacing?

Have a budget of about £4k, I'm thinking I should find something suitable for that. Or am I wasting my time?

Are the bodies still aluminium or steel?

Any good used Defender dealers in Herts, or in M25?

I live in the M25 area, and maybe subject to the Low Emission Zone. Is there a particular body type I should buy to be exempt?

I guess I dont want to be stung buying my first Landy. Have driven two already and love it. Just cant wait to buy one now, but have learnt from a past lesson not to buy the first one you see!

Any help gratefully appreciated?
