Landy does a good job! But gets a little tired towards the end...

Just been on a holiday, which involved driving all the way to Southampton with no stops.

Then three days later, driving all the way back up, with no stops.

The trips over 190 miles each way.

So there was 4 of us travelling down. 3 with cars. Me with a Defender 110 SW TD5, a vauxhall corsa, and a vauxhall astra estate. The conditions we decided when we sat down to travel down was we needed something reliable, with good fuel economy, comfortable and reasonably fast.

Now, I refused to get in the corsa, because I hate corsas. So the choice here was logical, we went for the landy!

Now, in short, it managed the trip down, everyone was comfortable, smiling when they got out in Southampton. I was driving the entire way, none stop, and didn't feel bored, tired, uncomfortable etc. It was an extremely nice drive.

Same thing back up. Up to about 10 miles away from home, it was still on the same tank of fuel that we set off with 3 days earlier (thats 380 miles on one tank of fuel).

Unfortunately, we never got to see if the fuel would go much further. As we were travelling down the motorway, I suddenly realised my speed was dropping, and no matter what gear I put it in, no matter how hard I pushed on the accellorator (can't spell) it would not pick back up. Into the hard shoulder I went. So in the hard shoulder, waiting for a pick up, just for fiddlings sake, I tried setting off again. Didn't move but the revving was accompanied by a sort of grinding/rattling sound. Low range, no good either. Engaged diff-lock, high range. It set off.

So I stopped, not wanting to drive home with diff-lock on, and got out the car. On walking off the hard shoulder, I noticed that there was a nice leak of something that looked like oil coming from the drivers side front wheel. But none up in the wheel arches.

So we got home, I noticed that with diff-lock disengaged, the front propshaft turned as per normal. But no movement of the vehicle.

So through all the above I've determined that its probably a half-shaft or drive-flange. (yet to get around to checking due to work).

But can anyone point me in the direction for what could be the cause of the oil coming from the drivers front wheel?
 
You will probably find that a bearing has failed or the half shaft has failed leading to other damage such as the oil seal failing and letting oil out.

Some sort of combination of these things anyway - bearing fails, shaft then under extra stresses it fails, other way round, something.

Where EXACTLY is the oil coming from? I would probably start by stripping this hub anyway till I find broken bits.
 
Aye been looking at paddocks website. About £25 for a new half-shaft, drive flange not too bad. After replacing the ECU its all comparitively cheap! lol

Will strip it down tomorrow night, put some pictures up and let ya all know how I get on.

By the way guys. Also wanted to tell you all just how well it did! 380 miles on one tank of fuel, and the best long journey drive I've ever had, and the passengers loved it too! Said it was the most comfortable vehicle they've travelled so far in!
 
Jacked it up, got ready to remove the wheel, found alot of sidewards (if you get what I mean) play in the wheel. Take this means a wheel bearing?

Then removed wheel, on one of the bolts just behind the wheel, lots and lots of crap there, looked like congealed oil mixed with circlips.

Currently struggling to remove brake caliper, really struggling, not sure I've got the right bolts to remove so I'm on here looking for diagrams of brake caliper retaining bolts lol and thought I'd update y'all
