Hi Chaps I am having problems with my landrover 2002 td5 2.5td auto

The problem is when I switch the engine off and let's say I leave it in drive or any gear apart from park, what happens is if I turn the engine back on I get the M and S in green flashing and the gearbox feels like it stays in 3rd gear, so what I have to do is switch the engine off in park so it resets it self and then it's ok it will drive normal, now I no what your thinking don't switch it off in a gear then lol well that's was we was doing for a long time, but up entill recently the M and S has come on even when your driving the car in drive, any help on this would be great as I am stuck as what to do ??

It's normally the XYZ switch on the gearbox. Could be low power on the battery but it's normally the switch.

Ok thank you I will have a look into it, so it's called the xyz switch, do you happen to no were it is located ? Thank you again
It's on the passenger side of the gearbox right under an air conditioning pipe which often is the cause of the problem as it drips water on to the switch. They ain't cheap unfortunately but they can be fixed if you are handy. There is a thread on an Australian Land Rover forum somewhere about how to fix it

There are several causes of the m&s flashing.
You need the fault codes reading by nanocom ,hawkeye or dedicated lr garage before going any further as genuine xyz switch is about £500 fitted.
Even if the fault code indicates it is the xyz switch at fault this may not be the case as a fault in the wiring loom can give the same fault code.
Do weather conditions play any part in the frequency of fault occurring, do the lights in the gear lever console flash with the selector indicator in the dash display or do they disappear altogether.
A search in this and the discovery forum for m&s and xyz switch faults will give you some ideas.

Hi thank you for your input no weather conditions dose not appear to play any part in the m and s coming on, and yes the red light in the gear lever dose flash togeather with the lights in the dash? The landrover has been very well looked after so I am hoping its not the loom,
