Landrover Discovery TD5 ES 2001 water dripping

My Discovery is constantly leaking from around the air vent passenger side middle row of 7 seater. I have checked sunroof for possible leaks without any success. Only seems to happen with heavy rain. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have similar problem on same model but my leak drips from passenger side map-pocket.Two mechanics have tried to sort it - no joy. A third mechanic reckons it could be a blocked drain - drain runs from sunroof back to rear tailgate. He didn't want to tackle the job as he hasn't done this job before.
I have posted requests for help on various sites for finding the drain and how to unblock it - if I get any good replies i will copy you in. Good luck!

Hi, I have recently fixed I think, (well it dont drip no more) My front sunroof on my TD5. The drains were blocked. The water was pouring inthrough the sunroof, down the winding handle, head lining over the wind screen and through the light.

The way to prove this is to open your sunroof and pour water into the left and right side of the sunroof tray, as much as possible without it dripping into the cab and watch for where it comes out. It should drip out at the back of the front mudflaps. IF it doesnt, your drains are blocked.

Now you aint gonna get at them from the sunroof, coz the sneaky buggers at landrover have put them right in the corners of the sunroof tray, so the head lining has to go.

I managed to do it by removing the sunvisor, overhead bins, and handle over the driver door. The lining can then be pulled down just far enough to see the hose, pull it off and blow it out. Re make the end off before you put it back though, as it if is a loose fit it will just leak again.

I also took the glass off the sunroof and removed the rubber seal, cleaned it and the tray where it sits, and glued it back with black silicone.

This has fixed this drastic leak. Check it out it may work for you.

Have a look at my previous answer re the front sun roof, I am going to tackle my rear one soon, as I have a shower from the back everytime I move off after heavy rain, and it leaks in over the backdoor, passenger side. I'll let you know how I get on, but if you have had any replies I would be most greatfull.
But persanally from experience with the front, my guess is that the head ligning has to go!

I have a slimilar problem with water coming in at the forwar corners of the headlining. The difference is I do not have a sun roof. I have noticed the roof rails are not all that tight so I smeared some vasaline around the rail fittings but the next time it rained the leak was back?

Any suggestions?

I'm going through the mill with this at the mo. Mine used to leak through both sunroofs and drip at all corners. I took the lining and sunroofs out before xmas, resealed both roofs and replaced them. Thought i'd cured it them it started again last week. Think the rear sunroof hasn't sealed properly so that needs re-doing. Also it's pooring in from the rear left alpine window. So it's either remove and reseal it or just seal it with it in.

Mine was leaking at the front corner roof lining, i have no sunroofs so i sealed the top of the alpine window after a water test with clear mastic and that cured it. If we ever get another dry day give it a water test over the alpine window, apparently theres a fold in the metal that runs the length of the car under the roof lining and that is why it appears there.

I think the (extensive) water leak problems on mine started after we used the roof as a photography platform on an archaeological dig in Romania. I would therefore advise against this practice (standing on roof, not the archaeology). On the other hand, everyone seems to have this problem, so maybe it was there all the time and just got worse...

Last night (using a syringe and needle from a print cartrige re-fill pack) I injected hot vasaline under the rubbers between the roof bars and the roof. Its just started to rain again (does it ever stop?) so I shoudl know later if it worked or not. If this does not cure it then i will move on to the alpine windows.

I will still need to tighten the roof bars, not sure it I want to tackle the headlining myself, from what I could see from taking the sun visors down yesterday the headlining is glued to the roof here and no doubt it is in other places. May be it is better to do it yourself so more care can be take and time than paying a garage to tear it down and bodge it back up (not saying garages are like that but its a possibility).

If I did, I would replace the rubbers. Any advise on tackling this job (I have seen the guide by Ottie. I have a feeling it will not all go back quite as tight as it is at the moment the thinks will be a bit loose.

friend of mine had leak problem which he thought was sunroof but turned out to be rear roof rack rail which allowed water to make its way into the veichle and progress down to drivers side and accross to the passenger area. Check it out as it could be same on your landie.
