I joined the pipe going to the lift pump to the pipe which goes into the injector pump and then undid the injector pipe and cranked it over until it fired up but now I'm stumped as to why I've still got the problem
To be honest I am not surprised you still have a problem as I said to someone on hear the other day. The lift pump supplies more fuel than is needed as it needs to presure feed the the system. Excess fuel goes back to the tank via the return line. If this blocks it normally will blow the injector leak offs, off. In your case though I agree with the previous comments, it is either the lift pump, or the fuel feed line blocked up.
So what to do... first remove the lift pump feed line and blow back down the line. You can do this with your mouth or an air line. If you use an air line keep the air presure low and remove the fuel filler (you dont want to blow your tank up). This should be free flowing within reason.
With the fuel feed line off connect an one end of another line to the lift pump, and feed the other in to a fuel can (at least 3/4 full as you dont want to suck air) connect a second hose to#the fuel return line, and feed this back to the same fuel can.
Then crack the fuel filter blead nipple / bolt until it can leak, manualy pump the pump with the leaver on the bottom, until the diesel flows air free.
Then tighten it carefully and do the same to the injection pump blead.
When this is done crank her over until you have blead all the air from the injector feeds.
Now she should run fine,when she has run for a bit 20 mins- 30 mins stop her and check the blead in the fuel filter. If there is any air you either have a leak or the lift pump is not efficient enough to keep up, and therefore you have your answer.
