Land Rover Wolf Current Situation

Good day everyone, I recently searched the forum about the current situation with the Land Rover Wolfs but I found nothing. Are the MOD looking into replacing them anytime soon? When this happen I would guess they will become ridiculously cheap to buy or are they going to sell them to other less developed nation's militaries? Any thoughts on this would be great, thank you.
 
No idea on current availability, that said there are usually plenty for sale though. Personally I struggle to see the point of them. For civilian use the MoD models are generally the worst spec Defender you can buy. Prices have been stupid high for them.

If you can get a bargain and buy cheaper than a regular model I can see the sense. Otherwise I'd say they are one to avoid.
 
Military still have plenty in every day use. Our model plane club site is on a military training ground [ old WW2 airfield] The other month they were having a driver training day, every thing from minibus to great big eight wheel off road trucks and even articulated tankers. Several Wolf's in use as well.
I was just cruising my model plane low along the strip when a Wolf came alongside and occupants were checking out the model. Suddenly the driver floored it, the race was on so I gave my plane the beans and zoomed past them. A lesson I hope, no way a Landy is going to escape a drone.

That's a very interesting story😂👍🏻 do you perhaps know how fast your plane was going?
 
Not an armored one just the heavy duty chassis, lots of military kit and four soldiers. They came to my farm on exercise looking for a high point to set up a mobile comms unit so I was driving over ground I know well and could make the comparison.

That's very interesting. One reason I really like the defender is because it is quite comfortable over rough terrain. Is the wolf chassis a bit stronger and heavier? Thanks.
 
Yes the Wolf chassis is stronger.[ trying to be soldier proof]
The Wolf 110 was smoother across the lumps and bumps than my Ninety but it was harder going on the uphill and lost traction sooner because of the weight it was carrying.

Stronger if you are throwing it out of a helicopter or taking it into a war situation. But for road or even off road use you'd not be able to tell any difference. Likewise with weight, it must be heavier, but probably not by a huge margin as it still needs to carry a payload. I don't have figures, but would be most amazed if it should be of any consideration when deciding to buy or not.
 
Thanks I can imagine it must be a bit heavier but I will only buy one if they become incredibly cheap in the future if the military replaces them or something like that.
 
We have two Wolf’s, both soft top 90’s, a Ceremonial model painted in deep bronze green, used for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2016, has had virtually everything rebuilt by the army. The other one is in NATO green and has also been rebuilt by the army including new body. If you’re careful and choose wisely there some nice reliable ones out there, I much prefer them to the civilian models.

Wow! That's two neatt looking Wolfs. If I may ask how much did you pay for them? If I ever decide to buy a Wolf I will look for reliable ones like you said. Why do you prefer the Wolfs over the civilian Defender? If you don't mind I have some more questions about the Wolfs if you are willing to answer them.

Why would the army rebuild a Defender?...do they not have a cost sheet and just flog it off and bring a new one out of storage thay look to good to come out of REME workshop...

Hi Jan, let’s just say they weren’t cheap, I also have a matching Penman trailer which is ‘as new’ the British army evaluated the Landrover Defender and realised they weren’t up to what they required as a fighting vehicle and gave Landrover a specification of what they needed so an upgraded Defender was developed, it has to be superior to the civilian model so this is what I decided to go for, if it’s good enough for the army…. Ex Military Defenders have had a tough life however they’ve been serviced and repaired after every operation far more regular than any civilian model, I’ve only had to do very minor work since we acquired them ( one belongs to my son ) water pump, ‘P’ gasket, fuel tank and major services.
They’re far better than the civilian ones even the tatty ones look cool. Where ever I stop people will ask especially ex sqaddies.
I had an ex military series Landrover 88 in the 1970’s also a series 1, these are another level.

Who did you buy them from?...it wasnt from the MOD my 101 in my avatar came from Foley 4x4 and I have the release paper to them and some paperwork of work they did galv chassis and 24-12v...MOD sell to approved disposal companys in bulk...
