I was hoping for something more......well, more. He hasn't really done anything that I haven't already done. I'm not sure about what he was saying about freewheeling hubs preventing the front prop and transfer box from rotating. I thought FW hubs just disconnected the wheels from the drive but the drive was still rotating, maybe I misunderstood him. His landy is in nice condition though.

When a Series transfer box is in the two wheel drive setting, the front prop is not being driven by the gearbox. However it is still connected to the front wheels via the front differential. The front diff and prop will be rotated by the forward movement of the tyres.

The free wheeling hubs disconnect the front wheels from the front drive line. When the hubs are disengaged the front wheels will turn freely without turning the diff or propshaft. This saves wear on the front driveline parts and may slightly reduce fuel consumption. It is said that you have to do a lot of miles for any noticeable difference in fuel usage.

Ta, that makes sense.

I usually alternate between 2x4 and 4x4 with the free wheel hubs changing from one to the other every tank fill up. I can't say I have ever noticed any difference between the two states.

I found the only time you noticed freewheeling huns in or out was when the engine was not powerful enough, ie 2.0 diesel, and every little thing helped, have enough bhp in the first place and fwhs ect become irrelavant.

I've read online that if you have FWH fitted you should regularly engage them for a few miles to maintain lubrication to your upper swivel bearings otherwise they dry out.
I'd also point out how important it is to engage them when crossing flooded fords of around bonnet height otherwise when the rear of your Landy floats and you end up facing upstream with your back wheels off the ground you can't quickly engage FWD and drive out of the water. Instead you have to switch off your engine, get out and walk...
Sadly, that's NOT something i read about online!
