Land Rover recall

I bought my first Defender ( a 2011 TDCi 2.4) three weeks ago and now Land Rover are saying that the suspension might fail and it needs immediate repair.

Anyone else got the recall?

Me for one. And I saw a post earlier this week for another one. Its a problem that has been known about for about ten years, first saw this recall back then when (I think) JLR in South Africa started their recall for this problem. Mine is due for its MOT on Monday, hopefully the wheels will stay on long enough to get it through ------- .

What part of the suspension is deemed by LR to be at risk of failure?

l've never heard anybody complaining that their TDCi suspension has "failed"

What's the problem with the suspension ?

Does this mean they (LR) will recall all the D3/D4s with dodgy crankshafts ?

Don't the welds break on the axle tube and the swivel falls off?

Has anyone actually had this happen? l've never seen it reported on any forums. l guess it must have happened to someone

I saw it a while back but can't remember which forum it was, maybe here or Def2.
Axle didn't completely part company and luckily it was low speed

It did, and am going to need some time to read it all thanks, just interested I don't have that issue.

But are the brackets LRs cure or are they an excuse by LR (they seem to have LR numbers?) "if you take it off road you need these"?
Sounds like a band aid to me, when major surgery is needed

Cos this sounds like a problem caused by cost cutting in the process, much like the crank issue.

Read some of the Defender2.net posts. I didn’t realise it’s been an on-going issue for years.

If the brackets are fitted and the axle still fails; will Land Rover pay for the repair? The recall notice fails to mention that!

I can't believe they haven't all been done by now.

Got mine booked in for the work to be done. They need it for an hour or so, to undo a couple of bolts at each end of the axle and add in a couple of brackets and put the bolts back in. From reading the thread in the "other" forum, I reckon the welds splitting on some front axles has been happening in Australia, and South Africa more than anywhere else. I do remember talking to a SA colleague back in 2014 about this issue. So probably occurring in off road extreme use, and very heavy duty work. The brackets appear to be to stop the front hub assemblies parting from the vehicle when the welds eventually break ----- .

Update:

Just spent 3 hours waiting in the local Land Rover garage whilst they fitted the new brackets. I thought it was going to be a complicated job but in reality, the bracket is held on by the radius arm bolts and would take 5 minutes to complete. Sorry for the poor quality pictures.
