Land Rover on vegetable oil?

Anybody out there running a Land Rover on vegetable oil?

I mean straight vegetable oil (waste or fresh) and not bio-diesel.

I am looking to buy a Land Rover and want to know which model I should go for if I want to run vegetable oil through a diesel engine.

Do a search on here on the subject, there's oodles of threads about it, both partial and veg oil only.

To run veg oil only you need two tanks as you still need to start up on regular diesel, then switch to veg when warm.

Running on SVO constantly will also cause bore glazing more so in direct injection engines.

Bore glazing only seems to occur if the vegetable oil isn't hot enough before you switch over.
I've run my Land Rover for over 4 years now, and have had no problems, in a 3.9 l direct injection diesel engine.

New Veggie oil here is more expensive than diesel !

Jim, I've never bought new vegetable oil for the Land Rover, I just filter and de-water used vegetable oil.

There y'are & there's the geezer who (as far as I remember) posted all the original stuff on the subject.......Mr Ron frum Oz. The veggie oil eggspurt.

That wuz the fred I wuz thinking of. Went on & on, but was a lot of good stuff in there. Weren't yours Ron, but do remember your conversion sounding like it made a lot of sense.

So your not using is constantly, if you run the engine on it all the time glazing will occur. i.e. its not a good idea to simply fill the tank with SVO.

i have an old diesel generator that runs on a 50/50 mix of old enjun oil an red diesel will a landy be hardy enough to do this

Alistair, theoretically, you should be able to run your Land Rover on a 50% mix, but the Lucas CAV injector pump on the Land Rover diesel doesn't like anything much more viscous than diesel, because it uses the diesel to lubricate the pump.
To overcome this problem, especially in the cold winters you get in Scotland, it would pay you to fit a dual fuel system with a heat exchanger in you waste oil tank, and I would still cut the oil with diesel fuel or heating oil, you could reduce the amount of diesel in warm weather, it would certainly save you a lot of money in the long term.

Discomania, I don't ever start the vehicle on oil, always start on diesel, I've worked out how far I can drive before switching to oil, about 5km, to achieve this even in winter, I made up a smaller tank with a much larger heat exchanger.
It seems to work well.
