hi all new to the forum, i have a series 3 fitted with a 300 tdi and range rover diffs which give good gearing but i have a overdrive kicking about would this make much difference to the gearing with the diffs aswell? i no little about the gearing but the range rover diffs made a huge difference when i fitted them but was wondering about the overdrive aswell. any help would be great.

Overdrives like 5th gear isn't it ? so I guess an overdrive on a 5 gear gearbox if you're using the 5 speed manual box already wont make any difference

Ridicule me if I'm wrong ;) I'm prepared

youre right youre wrong...... with a five speed box it will still give another higher gear..... ive never owned one so cant say whether it will actually fit or not

When you engage your overdrive at cruising speed it will lower your revs, which should make it slightly quieter and slightly more economical. Theoretically it does increase top speed as well, as long as the engine is gutsy enough to cope.

5th gear is over drive, as top gear in old boxes was straight through drive 1 to 1 ratio ,engine speed same as ouput, in 5th gear output is higher than input ,ive recently fitted 3.54 diffs in 109 carawagon it has overdrive to and still pulls well with 200 tdi ,not too higher than having 3.54 diffs on 5 speed box,the difference between diffs is engine has to turn round 4.7 times for 1 wheel rotation and 3.54 engine does 3.5 turns to 1 wheel rotation 33% increase in gearing
