Morning.

Rather than buy a full socket/tool set with things I don't need, I'm going to build up my own kit in a tool bag with just the individual things I need for oil/filter servicing, roadside repairs and simple fixes on my Discovery TD5.

What, in your experience, would you get?

So far, I can think of

  • Standard ratchet wrench
  • 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15mm sockets
  • couple of extension bars
  • Big phillips/small phillips driver
  • big flat head/small flathead driver
  • torx bits (not sure which sizes are common on the disco)
  • Torque wrench
  • 10-15mm combination spanners
  • oil filter removal strap/tool
  • Multimeter
  • Set of mole grips
...I aim to buy other stuff, for example big sockets for diffs etc as and when I need them...and I don't think there's any imperial sized stuff on the Disco 2?

What else would you add? Particulatly for simple servicing like changing the oils and filters? Or for repairs you could do at home without "specialist" knowledge or equipment?

Grease gun,angle grinder,impact driver,angle grinder,big hammer,angle grinder,Big scringe for diff,gearbox oil changes,angle grinder,32mm flat spanner for viscouse fan,angle grinder!

Oh and a angle grinder comes in handy for all those nut's and bolts and other farty things that have more rust on them than the TITANIC that wont budge for olt on earth:D

i reckon the best way is to buy a cheap socket set so yu get a selection (and a case) and then replace them with good stuff when they break.

That's actually what's started this off - got a crappy cheap socket set but I fancied the idea of having a bespoke kit in the smallest possible case to carry around instead of a big grey plastic case with daft tools in it that I would never use on the car! :)

Not sure if I'd carry and angle grinder around all the time, but I would agree with the idea of having one available!

What's an impact driver? Is that the one you hit with a hammer to get stubborn nuts undone?

So far, we have then :

Standard ratchet wrench
10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15mm sockets
couple of extension bars
Big phillips/small phillips driver
big flat head/small flathead driver
torx bits (not sure which sizes are common on the disco)
Torque wrench
10-15mm combination spanners
oil filter removal strap/tool
Multimeter
Set of mole grips
32mm Flat Spanner
Hammer
Impact driver

..and at home
Angle grinder
Big syringe/pump for oil changes

..Keep em coming :D
