hi,
New to the forum, but wondering if anybody in the forum can offer some advice.
Recently purchased a new galvanised chassis for my 300 tai 110 CSW.
The chassis when we started the build, fouled with the fuel tank filler and also, when the engine was fitted, it fouled with the power steering pump, as well as various other small issues.
A local landrover dealer had a look and advised that I was trying to fit a TD5 chassis to my vehicle.
The original chassis supplier was good and despatched a replacement 300tdi chassis. When the chassis arrived, it was the same as the one I was fitted, I am now locked in a problem, where I have two chassis that don’t suit my vehicle and a dealer and supplier disagreeing. I am in the middle watching my money disappear.
Have any other owners who have undertaken replacement found big issues with fit.
are there any definitive measurements that show a tai or td5 chassis.
Thanks for any help.

Was the seller “shielder chassis” by any chance?

Yes, it was shielded, but in their defence, they have sent a replacement chassis, but I still have fouling issues. A local dealer insists that it is a td5 chassis that shielded have sent twice. Unfortunately, I do not have my old chassis to take measurements as the workshop have scrapped it.

Ask @border . He has a bare original 110CSW chassis he has just started rebuilding so may be able to help with measurements.

I would suggest that the most obvious differences between the 300tdi and TD5 chassis is the engine mounts, they are quite different.
This pic shows 300tdi engine mounts, TD5 as far as I am aware have much larger mounts that utilise two bolts rather than a single bolt.
Confusingly, Shielder's web site seems to show a pic of a 300tdi chassis for all their model range of Defender chassis.
If you look at their image for a TD5 Discovery chassis you will see what TD5 engine mounts look like.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply and pictures.
Having no looked at the pictures above, I do have engine mounts that are below the chassis level, which would indicate that I do possibly have a 300 td5 chassis.
That being the case, is there any simple way xplaination as to the fuel tank foul and the fact that the engine fouls with the power steering pump? Am I missing something really obvious. Thanks for assistance.

I fitted a genuine td5 chassis to my 1986 110 and yes, the fuel filler or sender , can't remember which, fouled. I had to cut a web away for clearance. Fuel tank mountings are also different at the front iirc and also engine mounts obviously.
Twas 16 yrs ago so memory is abit foggy.
I remember having to weld the fuel tank mounts onto the new chassis off the old though and the web cutting. A td5 tank may solve your problems I'm not sure?

I ordered from Shielder last year, if you do a search for “Shielder chassis” on here, you will finds thread on it and can have a read.

To cut a long story short, they didn’t deliver, which is a blessing for me really, as I now have a Marsland Chassis. I would avoid them at all costs, for anything!

If I were you, and you have already received 2 chassis with the same issue, then I would return them both for a refund. If they don’t work, then by definition, they are not fit for purpose. Get a refund, put the small amount extra to it, and get one from one of the “big boys” who make chassis.

If you google “defender chassis dimension” you will get some LR drawings that show specific and key measurements. I’m not certain it will show you what you want, but it may be a start.

just remembered this.
Had a look at my td5 chassis and I had to trim both sides of the chassis at this body support to get clearance for the earlier steel tank filler and same other side for the sender.
Also tank mountings as I've mentioned. You shouldn't have that ball ache though so send it back.

Hi, Thanks for the replies. I have attached some pictures below. An aspect that concerns me, is that the chassis manufacturer has now confirmed that they have sent a TD5, however the engine mounts appear to be as shown in the TDI post above. Hopefully receive another chassis next week.

Your wasting your time and money dealing with them. First they said it was wrong, so sent a new one that was supposedly correct, now it isn’t.

What are you going to do when the next one turns up and is also wrong?

The rear end of that chassis is exactly as my Marsland chassis, so I don’t think there is an issue with that part. I don’t think it will work with a steel tank setup though.

Hi, The old a new chassis shown. The engine mounts on the new chassis are the same as those on the old one, so this would indicate TDI? going on the pictures in previous post, however mounting brackets and rear end are different on both.

This is the foul I currently get on the engine to power steering pump using the new chassis.

Dont worry too much about the rear end. The difference is one is old and designed to accept the steel tank, the other is new and designed to accept the plastic tank.

Can you take a photo of the steering pump, from the top looking down? I will try and get a photo of mine at the weekend to compare locations. Does the drop down steering arm and steering tie bar line up with the chassis mounts? Links for reference to parts.

Hi Mick1986, thanks for your reply. I have to agree with you, but not sure if I am too far commited as a company is doing the work for me, I unfortunately supplied the chassis for them.
When you say the back end is the same as your Marshland chassis, would that be TD5 or TDI?
I am still puzzled as to why, with engine mounts supposedly correct for tdi, that engine sits low and if engine mounts are correct for TDI, then why does back end of chassis appear to be TD5?

Totally baffled and loosing money!
Thanks

I have a 200tdi, 1992 110. The difference is I went with Marsland chassis as they use the newest style of LR chassis, then weld on whatever engine mounts you ask for. So in my case, I have the rear end of a TD5, but the front end of a 200tdi, almost the same as ROW spec (Rest of The World). I went with this setup to get the plastic tank and best possible chassis I could, being the newest design.

I can guess at a few possible problems here:
The engine mounts are welded in the wrong place.
The steering box bolt holes are drilled in the wrong place.
The chassis length is wrong.

Google land rover chassis specs and use one of the tech drawings with measurements to find out which one is wrong.

can't offer any advice I'm afraid, but I recently became embroiled with issues with shielder chassis myself... ordered a galvanised chassis and bulkhead for a defender 90 only to have our land rover specialist garage tell us that it was of appalling quality, with cut outs in the wrong place and really shoddy welding etc. now shielder are refusing to refund me and I've had to get my credit card company involved.
really hope you get it sorted, but either way, I wouldn't recommend shielder chassis to anyone. if it's anything like my experience it's probably just a really badly made chassis, hence all the fouling

Hi, thought I would give an update, just for any people contemplating a chassis change and where to buy from. Received chassis number 3 from Shielderchassis this afternoon. I have yet to contact them, but initial viewing of chassis not good. The engine mounts are in the same position as first two chassis delivered, so engine will still foul with power steering pump. The rear end look better, but welding standard is poor, some support brackets are damaged and one of the rails has taken a bash and cut through the galvanising and down to bare metal.
If anybody out there has a 300tdi 110 chassis (metal fuel tank) that they could take a few dimensions on, that would be handy, mainly location of engine mounts.
Next move is to order a chassis from somewhere else and try and get my money back from the Shielderchassis ones.
Oh what joy.
