Land rover 90 Axle

Hi, first time posting and newish Landy owner...

My 1985 90 200tdi currently has a not so happy relationship with a previously fitted disco axle. I have been offered a replacement in the guise of a 1988 Range Rover Diesel rear axle.

Can anyone give me some pointers as to whether this a) would fit, b) be a simple swap out replacement... I don't fancy stripping both diffs to find out if they match?

As the 200tdi was not standard in 1985, what vehicle is it from? My 1987 90 also has a 200tdi from a disco 1 and has the rear axle to match.
What LT230 transfer box ratio are you running? Is yours ex military with 1.67:1 or the 1.41:1 (like mine) I think the Range Rover used 1.00:1
It can be down to the matching of the ratios and axles to make it smoother.
I am sure @jamesmartin may be along later with better information!

Whats wrong with the axle thats on it, disco axles are more or less a straight swap except the 3 to 4 hole drive which you can change easy enough.
Maybe your problems somewhere else.

The Range Rover axle will fit, the diff ratio is the same on all coil sprung 90/110, Classic Range Rover, Discovery 1.
Where you may find a difference is the mounting bolts for the rear brake calipers, it depends on which axle you have at the moment. This wouldn't be a big deal if you are using a complete axle with discs and calipers.
Whichever parts you use, it is important to make sure that the calipers you use match the discs you use.

That was my point, if he has a problem with the disco axle, he may have the same with RR axle. LT77 matched with LT230 1.41:1 matched with Disco 1/RR axle all should be good. What the OP's problem with the Disco axle is not clear but you have answered his question and I just muddied the water

Hello, many thanks for all your comments... Not 100% sure on the engine but I am sure it is a disco 200tdi. To my knowledge the transfer box is original and only the axle has been changed so I think it is pretty safe to assume that the diff is original. The issue with the axle is that it is leaking quite badly from the hubs and have tried and replaced almost everything to sort, so easiest option now seems to swap out the whole axle and have found the classic range rover axle going cheap down the road from me. Good news to hear that it will fit I will go get it sorted. Thanks again all.
