Land rover 110 fuel sender/gauge reading issue 300tdi

Hey guys. Had a problem recently where my fuel gauge read quarter full (just in red zone), but engine stopped at traffic lights while idling. Managed to get vehicle onto pavement by coasting and tried ignition again, but failed. Turned out the tank had run dry without the gauge keeping up, as when i put in some diesel she started back up and ran fine after pumping it thru. I ended up filling the tank up all the way, and did about an hour journey on the A1 back home, noticing that the gauge hadnt dropped from reading full.

I recently fitted a new fuel tank, along with a sender and return. So im thinking it may be an issue with the sender over reading the fuel level? As my previous tank's sender worked fine and indicated the fuel level correctly on the gauge, and i could use the red zone as a reliable gauge to get me to the nearest station.

Wondering if there may be a simple solution such as re calibating the fuel gauge? Or is it just a case a replacing the sender unit again?

Fuel level seems to go down as should on the gauge oridnarily when driving around, so im thinking the sender/gauge is just not calibrating itself properly as it appears empty on quarter full, and beyond full when reading full and staying there until the gauge can catch up and start to drop back.

You can bend the arm that the float attaches to. Drain the tank, remove the sender then put, say, 5 ltrs of fuel in then mess with the arm, refitting it temporarily, until you are happy with what the gauge is showing.

Bend the arm up for your issue.

It's a float on an arm ... you take it out and bend the arm (just a little) upwards ...
If you know the mileage from a full tank (mine is about 200) then you can do 100 miles and bend the arm so it reports 1/2 a tank left.

When you have the sender out shine a torch in and see the level or use a stick, experiment with bending arm. As noted above best done at half tank.

Thanks so much guys! Didnt think to just bend the arm for the float. Will be a bit tricky to go back and forth for adjusting as the sender units fitted on the side of the fuel tank right beside the chassis rail... will see if theres a way i can connect the fuel lines in with the tank outside of the chassis rails.

Might be a silly question, but say if my fuel tank holds 75ltrs and i fill half that with diesel, could i then just use this as the gauge for a halfway mark to bend the arm to for the fuel gauge reading? Or would using mileage be a better reference point for setting the fuel gauge?
