Hi, I have a 2003 L332 and have had the following warning faults come up on the display ' trans failsafe programme' 'transfer box neutral' and the low range warning light.

All 3 of theses intermittantly appear and I have just had the gearbox replaced with the 'specialists' saying that there is some kind of electrical fault.

I have had the fault for about 6 months and the car is still driving normally and still cruising at 75mph so I know it's definately not in low range.

I have previously had it looked at but the garage just keep clearing the faults on the diagnostics machine but they come straight on again.

Has any one else had/having any of these problems ??

Regards
Nick

Faults with the high/low shift motor and its connections can give rise to spurious transmission error messages. It would be definitely worthwhile disconnecting, checking, cleaning and reconnecting the multiplug connector to the motor (C1858 in the photo) before spending any money.

If you are going to have a poke about underneath and remove the plug for the 10-pin connector on the transfer box shift motor you could check the rotary potentiometer resistance while you’re at it. This signal is the only feedback that the ECU receives regarding the position of the shift fork.

Measuring between pins 1 & 2 (see attached photo) you should measure around 4.7 kilohms in high range, 3.2 kilohms in neutral (i.e. fuse 37 inserted) and 1.6 kilohms in low range.
