L322 heater control panel fan running, is this correct?

Hi guys

I have just traced the source of the fan noise in my 2003 L322, i have removed the heater control panel from the centre console and there on the rear of the panel is a small cooling fan running, is this normal to be running as soon as you unlock the doors without switching anything on or starting the engine. Its not the main ventilation fan, and i have changed the final stage resistor but it has not solved the problem. I have the replacement wiring harness YNI500040K but not sure where it is located to replace it, any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.

hi matt i have just been out to check mine and when i opened my door there is a fan running at the bottom behind lower dash and thats before i put my keys in the ignition

Hi, I have the same 'problem' though the fan sounds like its on its last legs, though after the car has been started and run for a little while the noise stops. Is it a fault? Seems strange a fan needs to run on a cold vehicle... whats it cooling. Cheers Ian

Hi Ian, not sure if its a 'fault' as of yet, but its the cooling fan for the climate control panel, there is a very small fan on the rear of the panel presuming to keep the electronics cool. i am doing some more research into it, will let you know what i find out.

I think that the fan is there to draw air through the little grille on the front of the switch assembly so that a sensor can determine the in-car temperature

From what I can gather from reading all the other posts on the subject, I think it's pretty much normal Matt. Apparently, the fan will keep running for a while after the car is shut down, then turns itself off when the car finally goes to sleep. I've sat in mine with the doors locked for 15 mins and I could still hear it. Got bored in the end, and gave up waiting for it to turn off, but the car does sleep, so assume all is well.

Ahhh that makes sense! Must be a normal noise then. Glad thats sorted

just replaced my final stage resistor. not a hard job but being double jointed helps the first time you do one.
