it says in the manual the gearbox is sealed for life

Limp home on the ZF 5HP24 is 4th gear and the dash message display would show 'TRANS. FAILSAFE' if this had been selected by the transmission controller.
Have you seen a transmission overheat message displayed at all? If the transmission fluid gets too hot the controller inhibits upshifts to keep the engine speed high to maximise the pump/cooling flow through the transmission. A very common cause of this is sediment/corrosion blocking the bottom eight rows of the main radiator which feed cooling flow to the transmission oil cooler.
There won't be any indication of engine overheating as it uses the upper part of the radiator.
