Hi all
As the title suggests I'm after some advice on buying an L322 Range Rover
I've currently got a TD5 disco and fancy an upgrade
I hear gearboxes are an issue, should I budget for a gearbox? Are they really that bad?
I've had a P38 in the past and had most if not all of the common issues so I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty but it's nice to know what your getting into before you jump.
What sort of mpg are they achieving?
My jag only does 17 so again it's not an issue but I would like a petrol one but not if they do single figure mpg.
Also I may have the chance of a car known to me at a good price but high miles, do they do big miles without serious issues?
Any help would be useful so thank you in advance
I have had an L322 2007 TDV8 for three years now. I purchased a warranty from LR approved garage. (Its worth its weight in gold). I haveonly had minor issues apart from the rear diff (Covered by warranty). It is a great car. I use it for Horse/carrying gear for my band/dogs etc and it comed up trumps every time.
I have 21.5-22.5 mpg around town and 28 on a long journey.

Also capability off road is excellent. Do a lot of driving on farms with horsey stuff and just goes anywhere!! But read up what it can do. Do an off road course. So many people use these cars without knowing the capability and how to get in or out of trouble. Its worth it.

You will not get it but please make sure it is 2007 onwards. Have had older ones in the family and they seem to be trouble. What a car!!

I keep looking at a mixture of S/C ones and the early TDV8's they seem to be dropping in price a bit, I think the very high price of new model as meant that the L322 market has stayed artificially strong. But now there are a few L405's coming on the market its making the youngest L322's drop which is having a knock on affect on the rest of them. I'm sure just 6 months ago the cheapest TDV8 was 15k, you can get a reasonable one for 12k now it appears!

Keep an eye on the FFRR forum. There are two tdv8's for sale around the 10k mark. Kicked myself for missing out on a 02 plate V8 on offer for £4k - now on eBay attracting in excess of £4k bidding.

I had an 03 plate V8 on LPG which had a few niggles - stupidly sold it on rather than persevere with it which I regret now. On the lookout for a replacement now :)

Don't think a TD6 would be my first choice due to gearboxes and they sound no where near as good as the V8.

I've only had my one a couple months and I get about 12.5-15mpg its a 2002 V8 first thing I did was a gearbox service with a flush and a new filter followed by a full service. I've had a few gremlins, the battery was draining after being sat for 5-6 days but I've resolved them now, the air suspension is great and its a really comfortable drive and the note of the V8 sounds really nice. I fitted rear plug and play LED lights as it sharpens up the rear quite a bit a big difference. The previous owner before me had already fitted a new alternator, battery, compressor and air con system so my one has already had a few of the common faults done already followed by full service history too. My one has never been offroad (or so it looks) underneath is immaculate!! I love driving mines (being using it a lot recently as the Disco failed the test last week) but its only a second car as I use the Disco now its fully tested
