Hello everyone,

So ive just got rid of my L322 TD6, and gone for another L322 but this time the 4.4 v8 petrol version.

The seller has said about a possible battery drain, I did however notice that he keeps the key inside the car at all time, as he does all his cars on his land.

Would the key being kept inside the car, would this possibly cause the battery to drain? Being it senses the keys are still inside the car itself?

Thank you your help is much appreciated.

Yes if it's in the ignition.

Thank you, not sure if he kept it in the ignition or in the console.

But I'm picking her up Sunday. It comes up with trans fail safe on some start ups but I believe this to be because of low voltage

I leave the key in mine 7am till 11pm everything still goes to sleep after 16mins,
Iv left it in overnight only thing that iv killed the battery by doing was a weekend of boot open half hour later open boot wake the car up and repeat,

if you remove fuse 12 in the glovebox that removes the permanent live too the heater panel and heater resistor to narrow that out staying on,

Trans fail safe could be low voltage as stated above,
My td6 would do it randomly when the motor on the transfer box was dying it would clear though,
Td6 and 4.4 bmw v8 transfer boxes are interchangable for future reference

Thank you, might be worth pulling fuse 12 then to stop the constant live feed

Thank you for letting me know about the transfer box are the auto boxes in the 4.4 bmw better than whats in the TD6?

Bit better but still have issues, my local gearbox place says the gm box is actually better but let down by its torque converter, if that didn’t fail and cause abrasive oil then the gearbox wouldn’t have the issue it does. He did give a list of issues with the five speed zf but can’t recall. Either way keep couple of thousand to one side for either box to be rebuilt.

Also battery drain- pull the fuse for headlamp washers if they’re not parked properly it can cause a battery drain. How are you finding it over the td6?

Well I've test drove it and picking it up this Sunday I'm addicted to the noise already.

My TD6 was lovely but the box went and I put in a second hand one. I wanted the refinery of a petrol so decided to sell and go for 4.4.

Obviously nervous with the Gearbox having the said issues on this model, but I will cross that bridge if and when that happens, I think first things first will be to service the gearbox, changes smoothly, and apart from the initial message of "TRANS FAIL SAFE" on some but not all start ups. But this could be the voltage drop.

Absolutely, all RR are power hungry especially when starting and all the systems and modules need power, slight drop causes all sorts. That’s what my gearbox place said, keep them serviced and there not bad, he also said the gm and 5sp zf are much cheaper to fix, c.£2000 on a gm box for rebuild inc torque converter, he had a few 8 speeds in from RR and BMWs etc and said there about 3x the cost to repair.
I keep thinking of swapping my td6 for a 4.2sc but can’t justify the cost right now when there’s nothing wrong with my td6 but there are a few bmw v8s about.

Td6 boxes are easier to change, it could be as simple as battery being old and losing communications while cranking,

That’s my view, they are such power hungry especially on start up, when everything else is starting just not enough juice to go round, for cost of a new battery put one on then worry about it after. Least then you’ll have no issue with no start due to old flat battery etc.

I suppose a way to test that would be either new battery or attaching battery pack or jump leads and start it up. To see if the fault messages pop up.

You need a refinery with amount of petrol it will useo_O

So I dont think its a power issue does it now and again when going from Drive to other selections. Turn key on and off and it does erase. Think now would be a good time for a gearbox service.

I do have some ATF DIII would this be OK got the ZF5HP box?

Possibly, just go on somewhere like Opie oils site and enter reg and select transmission, should bring it up, or Morris lubricants do a oil finder page on there site, enter reg and it will show what transmission oil is needed.
