I have upgraded the satnav in my L322 to a MkIV BMW version.

I get an intermittent, but increasingly frequent, issue with it restarting.

It isn't the unit - this is the second one I have had with the same issue....so I suspect wiring??? Or a relay or something????

Whilst driving (or when stopped at the lights - so it isn't vibration related) the in-dash screen goes black (there is still power to the screen, I can see that it's lit...but not receiving signal). The radio stays on too.

The satnav then restarts, comes up with a message saying "do you want to continue navigating Yes/No".

It restarts immediately....no delay like a connection that loosens and then is knocked and comes back on.

No other electricals appear affected. Radio works for example.

Because it shuts down and restarts immediately it's a bit like the MkIV is overheating or something...and shutting down to protect itself. Then coming back on because it isn't faulty. Which is what makes me suspect an upstream issue with wires, relays or other electrickery.

Pretty sure all power is being lost to the nav unit, the GPS takes a little while to find itself again for example.

I have had a look for anything obvious with all the wiring and the earth connections...nothing obvious...no loose wires, etc.

Just seems to be more and more frequent now.

Any ideas an amateur can do on the diagnostic front? Or any ideas about giving a professional somethings specific to look for as opposed to just the whole loom?????

Only diagnostic I have not tried is reinstalling the old satnav unit and seeing how that goes....because I HATE IT! Sooooo old and clunky. But as I say this is the second MkIV unit I am using with the same issue.

Did you ever get to the cause of this? I've just started getting the same thing and have a very similar setup to you.
