L series Freelander Engine Smoking

I have the XEDI 2lt engine with problems and its driving me skyward!!

The car starts fine with no problems, revs fine and only when under load will this problem surface.. at 3000 revs, 70 MPH then a loss of power and the biggest plume of WHITE Thick smoke bellows from the rear.
This is so bad that I became concerned for other road users . Very little power from engine just about got of carriageway and noticed engine management light came on then went off.

Nursed the throttle and regained power and limped back home, as it was to dark to work on the car I took a look next morning. Started up first time no problem! Took off again up to 70 again and then loss of power with SMOKE.

New plugs , new filter air and fuel replaced, no holes in any of the pipes no fuel leaks and no obvious air in the fuel system pressure is maintained in hand primer and no air trapped in New fuel filter checked and re checked .
The engine does not miss fire or smoke when normal tick over revs are maintained.
However NOW as of ten minutes ago I cant pull up a small incline and at 3000 revs its miss firing and smoking so bad One neighbour came to my house as he thought we had a fire.

Can anyone offer me some help. as I am now at a loss and would love some new input.

I would almost certainly say its a knackered turbo

I just thought Id elaborate.I changed my engine in june, the engine I ordered came with all ancilliaries including the turbo.After a long journey it suddenly started to bellow a thick smoke screen and wouldnt rev over 3k revs,I limped the final 30-40 miles.
Because the engine was still under warranty I removed it and got another one and replaced it with the turbo that came with the 1st replacement engine.Still had the same problem.Because I was 120 miles from home I got it recovered to a garrage who reckoned it was a knackered turbo.So I changed it for the one off my original turbo,problem sorted.
also from reading other posts in here I now know the symptoms all pointed to a duff turbo.
I have seen them on ebay for about £400 new.HOPE THIS HELPS let us know how you get on.

A back issue of LRO magazine (december 2008) had an article about oil. it explained about what the colour of your exhaust smoke was telling you.

for white smoke it said "White means there is water in the combustion process, indicating a cracked block or head gasket failure. Or it could be turbo or turbo-associated problems - the white is oil that has overheated but not burned"

I am awaiting RAC Rescue as I got into the car and everything was working fine!!

Full revs no miss firing, and best of all NO WHITE SMOKE !!!!!

So like all motor users I took it out, The motor was running like a dream, then a large plume of white smoke, Miss fire and then total engine failure, I was able to pull off the main road and into a bus bay.

Walked home and called the RAC.... Due to over whelming demand for rescue services we will not be with you until 14:30 the nice lady said just before I terminated the call....

I work out of Plymouth but presently On Dartmoor

bit far away from me, otherwise I'd have come out just to tow you home if nothing else.

Some say its a beautiful place to live. I must agree!

However its not the best place to breakdown in, the moors are still very white and in some places inhabitable.

I am in one such place, some good news though!! received a call from the police informing me that I had in fact blocked a bus bay and that is illegal.

He went on to say " Because no buses are using the route, he was happy for me to park in the bay" I was so over whelmed by his kind offer it nearly brought a tear to my eye.... then I thought better of the tear ( Freezing Cold) and used the tissue I always told carry for such an occasions.

Oh what a wonderful Day !!! can it get better?

love it down there meself, many happy days walking up the river at dartmeet followed by cream tea at badgers holt.

lots of fun up the river at Ivybridge too ! (is it the river erm ?)

only if the RAC turn up and say "this is your problem and I can fix it right now with this part which costs only 50p"

if you do a search for turbo suppliers, there's quite a few come up. any local good 4x4 / independent land rover specialists near you ? might also be worth ringing a local independent land rover to ask if they have any 2nd hand units.

Thanks for the heads up! I also found that turbo as well as many others. Prices range from as low as 75 pounds to out of the box with no warrante for 400 pounds.

The PMF number for these turbo s, are many and the pre fix number GT1549 is just the start of many turbo s for sale that fit to most turbo motors. including Rover ,Landrover and Audi as well as the Freelander.......

Its a mine field....

Now as you know I only have 13 days left before I get it done and I am away!!!

I am looking for as you pointed out 4x4 dealers and back street rouges that work on 4X4s to see if they has a 2nd hand unit for sale.
