KN air filter element

Hi all,

Has anybody any thoughts on performance air filter replacements?
Are they worth the money? Would you notice any difference?
Or shall i just stick to a normal air filter replacement?

I fitted a K and N filter to a 200tdi engine, I have to say im not sure I have noticed and difference in performance, I only did it as I put a 200tdi in a disco 2 and none of the other air filters would fit

on its own you'll see no difference at all, 1-2bhp tops which you wont ever be able to notice. the only plus side is its washable but by time you've got the proper oil for it you may as well just buy a new paper filter.

you do however gain a small increase in mpg - I put one on my 300tdi and reckon on a 1 or 2 mpg saving.

Ive got a k&n on my 200tdi rrc and i put it in solely for the fact it can be reused over and over again. The oil and cleaning solution kit is about £20 i think and is enough for a few cleans. Overall id say get one as they are a superior filter to oem and you get some nice stickers in the kit. Not as cheap to use as fire starters tho.

Ah've got one in me bus (200tdi Def) and ah like it. Ah sometimes stick one of them paper ones in when ah'm cleanin' mine and the engine sounds totally different. Ah only got one 'cos me local indy had one goin' cheap

Never had one on a disco but had one on another car and there are cheaper ways of cleaning then but tbh if your not converting anything else I wouldn't worry although they can aid fuel consumption if they are kept clean

as for the k&N there are reports of them letting fine dust past and causing engine damage they are expensive as sad they are cleanable but the oil cost more than a new paper type filter and they cannot be used if you have a car with a MAF sensor (v8, edc 300s, and td5) as the oil on the filter covers the eliment in the MAF sensors

what about other makes such as green cotton, pipercross etc do they have a similar effect on MAFS

From experience they are all pretty much the same (Iused to tune Volvo's as a side line) although they ave to wkr hard an engine uses 10,000 litres of air for every litre of fuel which is a lot on any disco.

ive got a k+n 1 in my td5, been in for a year no problems with my maf sensor

there are filters on the market that haven't got filter oil on them. I will do a search later and post what i find. They have had to do this because of the problems with fouling the maf
