Hi all, im new here. Ive got a 96 P38 4.6. I am changing the o/s front hub for a new bearing and the n/s cv joint.

I remember reading somewhere that the king pins (not sure if im using the right term there) should have a certain loading on them otherwise they affect the steering. Mine feels vague and pulls around alot, so since i'm removing them i might aswell refit them correctly.

Also any tips for the above jobs would be helpful. I have been browsing this site for a while and usually found all the answers i need just by searching:)

Thanks in advance

There are no king pins as such on a P38 just top and bottom ball joints. If your steering is vague try fitting a steering damper or check the steering box alignment. It must be centered otherwise you will get steering pulling every which way. Details of how to do this are in RAVE. It involves setting the wheels ahead then shortening or lengthening the drag link until marks on box and column are aligned. You may have to refit steering wheel if it is then left off centre.

Thanks for the replies. I obviously got a bit confused somewhere.

What is RAVE? I'll have a go centering the box and then adjusting out the slack. I fitted a new damper but it still pulls, feels vague, shudders over potholes and generally feels like a bag of ****e

Have a look at the panhard rod bushes. This holds the axle to prevent side to side movement. Also check radius arm bushes. If any of these have gone soft it will allow the axle to move around. Rave is workshop manual down loadable. Look around this site for a download.
