Hi all, yes i'm new but in need of a lil help with my 110. The story goes somthing like this

Get kids in car, wait 5 to 10 minutes for a clear gap in pedestrians to start the thing up, because ermmm the whole road fills with smoke in 2 seconds flat and if there was a pedestrian in sight I am sure either they would be asphyxiated or return at night and torch the car.

Ok the smoke is pure white, it lasts about 15 seconds then everything is normal. No water loss, No oil consumption, No white sludgy bubbles on dipstick indicating head gasket faliure, well there is no water loss anyway.
Starts first time, engine turns over at a good rate.

Other hints which may help the saviour of my woes are that I am sure the thing does not use any diesel, I have forgotton where the petrol station is.

Oh and sorry, its a 'B' registered normally aspirated 2.5.

Injectors ? injector pump timing ? helppppp yesterday it took 15 minutes for a suitable lull in commuters to start the thing up.

ermmm I assume its 4 pots, starts real quick.
When I say smoke I mean the whole street fills and i seriously have to wait ages for passers by to pass lol.

But literally 10 secs later no smoke at all

Ok and today when driving in the dark I noticed occasional white smoke in the rear view mirror when taking my foot of the throttle, not much but

White smoke is just Diesel. It's the browny/ black stuff you've got to worry about. It sounds like it clears when the engine warms up. I don't find it embarrasing when I start mine up,2.25 Diesel as nobody in the street can see me for the smoke. Mine passed it's MOT this week, no problems with just Diesel smoke on start up.

I thought unburnt diesel was black smoke ?

If you saw the looks on peoples faces and the gestures they make when I start you would know what I mean.

I think those environmentalists are highly active around here too.

Ok I have to tell you this story, it started with one of those posters stuck under the windscreen wipers, 4wds polute the planet, blah blah blah.

I never bothered locking the doors, thinking even if anyone was insane enough to want to steal it, they would never get into gear or have the biceps to steer the thing. One day i noticed a brand new jacket draped over the drivers seat, I thought weird, how did that get there. A few weeks later, on the back seat was a 12" colour TV and 2 neatly packed bags of rubbish. Ok now I was concerned, so chucked the stuff and started locking my doors.

A few days later I awoke in the morning to find the hood left wide open. Nothing seemed to have been touched or damaged but. nothing for another few weeks then a bag of builders sand spread over the bonnet.

And the weirdest part to the whole story and final episode was a bunch of roses under the drivers side windscreen wiper.

Its been 4 months now and nothing.

OMG to this day I cannot figure out for the life of me who, why and what was going on. a CCTV camera was on the cards if anything else happened.

Anyway, back to white smoke, someone must know why ??????

Too much diesel that doesn't burn peoperly is black, white is unburnt, basicly vaporised diesel.

You should lock the doors, defenders get stolen all the time.

Once its started, wait a sec, then give it a load of throttle, if it stops the smoking quicker than before it would indicate a cold starting problem, caused by the glows failing.

Does it seem a bit rough on start up?

hmmmm very rough at startup, but starts literally straight away. The glows are fairly cheap, should I change them first anyway and see if it makes a difference ?

Thanks for all the ideas

Yes.

If its rough then its not firing on all, hence a bit of throttle will get the others firing and should stop the smoke.

On cold days, when I have quite a lot of bio diesel in, I get white smoke on start and rough idling, unless I give it a bit of the right foot, just enough to make it idle smoothly, thats then all the cylinders firing, so I would change the glows, if they are dodgey its only going to get worse as it gets colder.

my 200 tdi starts first time every time no matter what the outside temp is.
i dont even wait 5/10 seconds for the glowplugs.
maybe manchester is much warmer than other places?
:)

The 200tdi will start without glows in our climate, the 2.5 won't, I know I have one. Its partially due to having a seperate combustion chamber.
