I have a 1999 4.6 Autobiography which has developed a mind of it's own as far as the kickdown function is concerned.

I recently had "gearbox fault" appear on my dash when out the other day but it immediately went away and the car seemed to be functioning just fine as normal. So I did nothing about it.

Then a couple of days ago when on the school run, I was reversing (rolling back down the hill a couple of feet) into a space SLOWLY in what I thought was neutral but there was a little resistance and I looked down and thought that the lever was between reverse and neutral, so I moved it into reverse and that was that.

However, I have now got a situation where the car will attempt to kickdown (first level) while I am at about 25mph when I am not pushing the pedal down by hardly anything at all. When I am then at around 45-50 and pushing te pedal down a little more to use the first level kickdown, the car decides to go up a notch and give me it's full compliment level 2 kickdown (the one where the full V8 song comes in - you know the one!)

I have no idea what could be causing this problem, but I obviously think that it's something I have done.

The dash also told me this morning when I got in, that the two "rear windows were not locked". I have never seen this message before an have no I idea what it means. I did try to reset them by putting them down and then up again in one motion but this did not register on the dash as it does when you have disconnected the battery for example and the dash asks you to reset the windows. So I think that this may be a different issue.

Any help with these points would be a great help as I am planning on going away this weekend and am concerned I will break down with the family in the car etc.

Check your fluid level... Also any weaknes in the battery/alternator manifests itself in gearbox fault/display errors.

Check your battery connections and earths.
