hi guys my p38 diesel has just started with a few gearbox probs 1st prob is that sometimes when you go to slow down or stop it feels like it doesnt come out of gear and keeps trying to lurch forward and sends puffs of smoke out the back and once you drive off it settles down and behaves normal for time and the 2nd prob is when you kick down in either sport or normal mode it drops down a gear or 2 then goes to end of rev range then wont change up a gear the revs drop off and smokes again then when you release the throttle it will change gear an carry on ok, have any of you guys any idea what it could be my thoughts are a tempermental gearbox ecu if it is and i get another one would it need resetting to the becm thanks

what i did was according to the book, when cold start it up with handbrake on and footbrake down go thru all gears from park to 2 wait for every gear to click in then do same back to park turn off engine then check level, if there is another way please let me know and i will try that as well thanks

I'm sure mine says check with engine running, with the engine stopped the level rises as the oil drains back into the sump. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong (Probably Wammers LOL)

Hi it maybe the map ( manifold absoloute pressure ) sensor this signals the gearbox to change gear to suit the engine revs, mine failed about 3 months ago couldnt get into top gear, and was messing up the kickdown etc. spoke to a local mechanic who said tht bmw 5 series suffered a similar problem. I got one at alocal breakers and it cured the prob. small item mounted near the engine inlet manifold with a vacuum pipe and an electrical connection
