Key fob not working.

Hi, just bought a P38 2001 (51 reg) 4.0 Westminster. It came with 2 keys. Went out the other day to a local hospital, parked the car for 1/2 an hour, went for an X Ray on my arm with the key in my trouser pocket. Came back and the fob would not work. I had left the car open, (I think) so didn't need the remote, but when I went to start the car the Engine disabled warning came up. When pressing any of the buttons on the fob, the red LED would not and still doesn't light up. I've changed the batteries, fob still doesn't work.

I had my spare key bought to the car, the car opened normally, and started first time, and still does, but with the second key only.

Any clue's as to how to re-set the key, and how do I get the code or sequence to start the engine without paying a fortune to LR?

Make sure the batteries in the fob are good.There have been cases of new batteries being u/s.The battery contacts in the fob can also be temperamental.If the Red light does not flash,then it is there is a battery issue.Having said that ,the Fob electronics or the LED itself could have packed up.

If you get the light to flash then follow normal resync procedure.

If you do not have the EKA code for your RR,then go to your local LR dealer with the vehicle registration and personal ID and they will be able to supply the original code.

I can't really see why an X-ray should do any damage but it seems to have done so.

Try this.

When one changes batteries there is a bit of residual left in the fob, perhaps in a capacitor, I don't know.

Remove batteries. Press the buttons in long bursts for a few minutes. This should discharge the thing entirely and make it lose its memory.

Replace battery and resynch. I think that yours is new enough for this to just be a matter of inserting the key in the ignition and cycling through a start.

Probably won't work but worth a try.

EDIT: What's the condition of the rubber button cover like?

The radiologist is supposed to make you empty your pockets of keys etc before the Xray, I would guess the Xray energy has destroyed the electronics in the FOB. Make a claim against the NHS.

Thanks for your responses. I had another fiddle with the fob, and saw a glimmer of light in the LED. I put the key in, using a re-sync procedure from here, and hay presto, it worked. I now have two keys again.
