Key broken in Barrel

Hi all, newbie here. On behalf of my bro, his missus has broken the end of the key off in the Ignition barrel of their disco td5.
I have taken the whole unit off the column and not been at all able to get the broken bit out.
Would it be possible to get second had barrel and keys and just re-program the keys to the immob?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Thanks jyhelle but I think that refers to a door lock where as my problem is with the ignition.
 
the principle is the same, only it is more difficult to extract the barrel, there is usually a long brass pin to extract before you can get the barrel out (never opened my disco ignition lock, but I "arranged" several others from different makers), also if you intend to re-program the key you have to do all notches (10 I think instead of 7 or 8)

If you want to keep the same keys, Land Rover can supply a replacement ignition switch for about £250 - you have to supply your vehicle numbers and they match it up.

If you go for a second hand barrel, you will end up having to carry two keys - one to open the doors in an emergency (or I suppose you could use one of these magnetic key things to attach it to the car). As for the coding - there is a little gizmo attached to the barrel which reads the key fob - you will need to reattach this when you have swapped the barrel. Then open up the keys, and transfer your original keys' circuit board to the new keys. There are also lots of sites on ebays selling the key fob cases and the blade blanks - the blank can easily be separated from the fob, unless somebody has glued it in.

Are you sure the remains of the key blade cannot be extracted ? A decent mobile locksmith might be worth a try, and for the time spent on a phone call might save a more complicated solution.
 
If you can get the broken bit out you will save lots of hassle...if you do strip the barrel out and remove the broken bit again no worries as the transponder is in the Key fob/handle..and as the blade just clips in you can just buy a blade off rip-bay and have a local locksmith cut it same as the spare, hope you have one, and your back in business, the blade has no part in the transponder its just a standard metal blade.
 
shhh ... filing the wafers to program a lock to another key is a nice game of patience

I did it several times after buying a car with two or three different keys because some locks had been changed over time, everyone has her ways of having fun ! :p
