keeps cutting out!! advice please

i have a 1997 4.0 p38 gas converted (currently not connected) that keeps cutting out, it starts up fine and runs fine when cold but as soon as it gets up to temp there is a strong smell of petrol and it splutters and cuts out, then once it cools down it will restart and go for another few miles then do the same,??????
anyone got any ideas please
