Hi all,

I've just done the headgasket on my 1.8 K series Freelander, but the B@@@@y thing won't fire up.

The head was replaced with a good one from an MGF engine (after swapping the cam's over - The MGF cams had no distributor drive).

I followed the K series workshop manual and used new Payern head bolts and a Payern Multi layer head gasket with saver shim.

The only thing I did do wrong is, when I initially timed the cam up, I accidentally timed it with the crank lined up with the TDC mark as opposed to the 90 Deg BTDC.

When I was trying to work out why it wasn't firing I had someone turn over the engine while I was watching it, and noticing that there was optput from the air intake as opposed to suction, I went back and rechecked everything, which is when I notice the incorrect timing mark being used.

Re-aligned everything, correctly this time and now there's suction on the intake, but it doesn't fire up!

There seems to be petrol getting to the cylinders as when I too the plugs out they were wet. There is a spark getting to each plug (turned engine over with all plugs out and earthing) and there seems to be a healthy compression (unscrewed plugs and left them in spark plug holes, they all get blown upwards to a degree when turning the engine over) but nothing I do seems to get it to fire up!!

The only thing I can think of now is the firing order, but none of the plug leads were removed from the dizzy cap and because of the length of the leads it's obvious which goes to which cylinder.

Is it possible that the lead position on the cap has somehow been altered with regards to the firing order when I changed the cams over?

So what I'm basically asking is, with the incorrect initial cam timing (being 90 degrees out) have done any damage, or have I overlooked something that's blindingly obvious!

Any help with this would be much appreciated as I could do with the car in 2 days time for an airport run and I don't want to have to get a hire car if I can help it!!

Thanks everyone in advance.

Pete
