Hi all I am just starting out in the world of off roading after being passenger in my mates 90. I have £500/£600 to spend and would like either a 90 or a range rover V8 Lpg,I have trawled Ebay for months trying to find a good buy but no luck yet. Does anybody out there have any thing for sale or any input on what I shold be looking for. I live in South Normanton and am willing to travel about 50 miles.
Thanks for taking the time to read my first post and I hope to make many more

Cheers guys

Dave

For that amount you'd be better getting a reasonable Disco .. you're unlikely to get a Defender/90 in anywhere near decent condition.

Or double+ your money and even then you'll be lucky and will probably have an amount of work to do on it.

Or set your sights lower and get something that's fecked but repairable and work on it ... ;) Defenders hold their value very well, even fecked ones simply because they are so easily completely repairable.

welcome to the forum Dave

if you manage to find a 90 for that money keep looking and get me one please lol

ive got no complaints with the discos ability off road , it might not look standard but its taken over a year to get there and its got a decent heater

Cool I get the message 90's don't sell for £500:doh:
Perhaps I will look for a decent Discovery any perticular engines to look for or avoid? All help in finding me a decent off roader is greatly appreciated and all comments/p!$S takes are too!!

if your now seeking a disco.....then its boot floors(look under the carpet to see if there is one!)...inner wings, open all doors and check the floor /wing and of course a good check underneath.....as for engines to avoid? the 200mpi is very underpowered but the 200/300tdis should go forever

Hi Just found this on Ebay do you guys think it looks ok? Quite fancy bob tailing it
and sticking cheap lift kit on(if one exsist's) maybe if any money left some bigger tyres?
Item number 320344836620

its impossible to answer your last question......you are wanting to do it on the cheap yet then want to bobtail and run a V8 all be it off road
So really its down to you own diy/mechanical skills....but V8 parts arent cheap, youve a whole world of expensive electrical ignition parts to replace as needed,2 cylinder heads etc etc etc....so this one would have to be your call in so much as what skills you can bring to the table with you,but i wish you luck

if your just wanting to buy/build a cheap off roader then why not look at suzuki/lada niva? brilliant little toys that could give lots of fun at a far lower cost

Yeah i see what you mean, I work at a car dealership in Nottingahm and have full access to the workshop and my mate who owns the 90 and got me started is a very good mechanic,so locating cheap non gen parts and fitting them isn't a problem, but I am starting to realise a V8 off-roader is not going to happen:Cry:. Might try a 200tdi Disco but I really want to bobtail it I think they look awesome and I presume to be able to go anywhere off road it will need a lift kit? my mate with the 90 says I could borrow an old set of his wheels and tyres that he recently took off his 90. So there maybe hope yet !!

a lift kit???? yeah they look good i suppose but serve no practicle purpose whatsoever, indeed they worsen your off road ability in so much as they raise the c of g.
You can fit a 20,000' high light kit if thats your thing...but your axles are the still the same height off the deck!!
raise your tyre size and then you may get a lift from the height of the tyre wall...but unless your going someplace man has never been before(youl be after a space shuttle for £500 then, and they all have high mileage by the time they sell em on)then believe me you really dont need a lift.Indeed the amount of discos/90s you see at off road centres on their side due to a lift is amazing, yet the factory standard vehicles with maybe a all terrain/mud tyre simply trundles past unfazed.
With the budget youve set....id lower your sights and look a suzuki etc
