Hi
Hope every one is good to night
I need sum help and advice I have a 90 with a 200 tdi in it and I have started to turn it in to a overland /expedition and just want to know what to get what not at the min I have a roof rack roof tent winch bumper winch a 2" lift with all the arms changed making a storage drawer but really wanted to know what the best land rover expedition suspension there is or what works well for people any help and advise would really help
Many thanks
Nick

Nick,

remove the 2" lift. Get some HD standard height springs - lifting puts a lot more strain on the transmission and just adds failure points, you are going to be doing high mileage so want it near to standard.

For overlanding you need good A/T's roof tent and rack, rent or buy a fridge, second battery doesn't go a miss, but, most importantly make sure it is very well maintained and take some spares.

Hi thanks for getting back have a good set of ATs my truck is well maintained what make of suspension would you say a few PLl I have spoke to say 1" lift at the front and 1.5" at the back but not to sure just want to get advice from people that have done

Personally Bearmach HD springs.

Things is with any form of lift you are putting additional strain on the transmission, even only 1"... depends where you are heading, but, most places people overland you'd be ok in a standard height Freelander with a good set of A/T's - so - there really is no need (from a purely practical point of view) for lifts. It only lifts the body anyway, axles can still ground out!

Thanks for your help know just got to tell the wife that the £1000 + I spent last year on the lift kit has to come off as I did every thing both front and rear cranked arms both props are wide ones the brake lines never mind my thought from going away from the off road route to overland one

It's your landy at the end of the day mate, if you want to keep the 2" lift then do so, i's not going to stop you overlanding, if it's all new and done well then you should be ok, but, the best over land vehicles are close to standard on the suspension, etc.

Some people take old Series all the way to, around and back from Morocco... so... a more modern landy is going to cope...

I was just giving you the "best approach" in my opinion!

Thanks just new to this part of land rovers and just wanted to know the best route to go as have never done any thing like this be for just do not want to spend money when I don't need to on silly bits and bobs just want her to get to were we are going have fun when we are there and get home not on the back of a lorry lol but really am thinking about getting rid of the lift she might drive a lot better

Does she drive badly at present?

Where are you planning on going?

Be alot nicer on roads without lift

She drives a lot better now just done the ujs on the steering not planing any were far staying in the uk for our 1st trip north Wales just as a shake down. But how well dose any 90 thats 25 year old drive have driven a lot worse and a lot better but I know that on standard she will be a lot better on the road

If you're staying in the UK for now then you should be ok with your lift, Peterborough --> Wales isn't that far really, I've done further in a battered old series :) but if you're planning regular trips up to the outer hebridies (sp?) or France, etc. then standard height would be a better option.

Hello mate,

Thought I would put my spin on things. I have a C reg 90 that I use for overlanding which is completely over the top haha. I have 4inch lift, 35inch tyres, lockers front and rear, roll cage, roof tent, winch, winch bumper etc etc. the vehicle drives lovely on the road, sits between 70-80 on the motorway and is more something you would expect to see overlanding in the arctic but I'm off to morocco in October with bump and I'm not really changing anything (other than a new engine) so my advice would be to build your childhood dream and then maintain it properly. Providing all your kit is maintained (without the use of cheap shi*) then the vehicle will be fine. That's my opinion.

With the above in mind Im not saying this is the best set up or that anyone is wrong simply that I have built the vehicle I always dreamed of as a 15yr old boy and It has been fantastic. It's possibly not the best for overlanding but if you are stuck in the desert I would much prefer to be in my vehicle than in some of the better prepared overland vehicles with less off road capability.

Just means the on road stuff is a little less comfy but I'm happy to live with that ;).

Bump has answered your first question. Have standard suspension, then you will not be stuck for days running around some foreign place trying to get bits made when they break.

Try to keep the roof load as light as possible. I know that's difficult.

When you load, try to have the heavy stuff, including what's on the roof, inside the wheelbase.

Here's a nice list of springs to choose from

land rover spring specifications

Where are you going and when ?

Thanks every one not sure were we are going just started to change it from off road to this but hoping to get away with it soon

I have HD springs and terrafirma expedition big bore shocks, just some warning, it will sit about a inch high when unloaded and you will REALLY feel all the bumps in it, it's rock hard and not nice at all! However, once loaded up, where standard suspension will be sagging it sits at the standard hight and loaded it up it's a nice soft ride too, definitely recommended if you are going to have the 90 loaded up heavy for a expedition or whatever.

But yeah, I may take mine off when not on expeditions and put standard on.. It's too hard a ride for Britain pot-holed roads
